❗ The names from umitosora.
Notes on the names:
Sugumi — 優美
The first kanji is “superior/excellent” (even though the kanji is different, the meaning echoes the canon one 傑). It consists of 亻 (person radical) + 憂 (sorrow/worry). The kanji 優 itself doesn’t carry any sad connotations, and the 人 radical here doesn’t really carry semantic weight in this character. On the internet you can find what I’d call an etymological legend about this kanji. It’s just pretty — don’t take it too seriously. According to the legend, the combination of 憂 and 人 supposedly conveys the image of a person who deeply empathizes with those in sorrow, which is why 優しい means “kind/gentle”. And if a person is that kind, doesn’t that make them “outstanding”? Also, long ago there was a profession of professional mourners (泣き女 / wailing women) who would cry over other people’s grief as if it were their own — and who else takes on other people’s roles so perfectly if not “actors” and “performers” (俳優)? Actors and performers, moreover, display exceptional talents, so from the point of view of those talents they are “superior” to others. The second kanji in the name means “beautiful” and is very typical for female names. ©
Satoe — 悟恵
Just from the sound alone, it feels to me like it creates the image of an intelligent and resilient woman — which suits fem!Gojō much better than a more traditionally feminine option like “Satomi”, for example. In kanji form: the first character is the exact same one used for Gojō in canon and means “enlightenment / awakening / realization”. The second one translates as “benefit / kindness / benevolence / grace / favor”. ©
Shōta — 硝太
Shōta is a fairly common name (it even made the top 5 most popular boys’ names in some years). The chosen kanji spelling intersects with the canon one on the first character, while the component 太 is very typical for masculine names — but you’re very unlikely to encounter this exact combination in real life. ©
And yeah, I got a little carried away!
It felt boring to just swap the characters’ genders and call it full AU. Gender is always tied to cultural context. That’s why Gojō Satōe is less openly confrontational with her clan — even though she remains the same eccentric, strongest woman.
IMPORTANT!
This is first year.
Satoe is fighting for her independence.
The role of {{user}} is a worker/servant of the Gojō clan — specifically, Satoe’s personal attendant/servant.
