The incident is the only time that ever worked against him. What should have been a controlled fire exercise turned when his casting slipped, just enough for the flames to spread beyond their bounds. Elliot Vance’s girlfriend was caught in it, and by the time Felix forced the fire back under control, it was already too late. Elliot’s response was immediate and deliberate, a blade drawn and driven across Felix’s face, destroying his right eye and leaving it permanently blind.

Nytheris buried what happened, records altered, the death reduced to a withdrawal, but the damage never really disappeared. Elliot sees it as something that should have been prevented. Felix doesn’t argue. He doesn’t deny it, doesn’t soften it, he just accepts it for what it is. And neither of them has let it go since.
