International Talent School

International Talent School, often called ITS, is a prestigious international high school located in an unnamed modern country in Southeast Asia. Surrounded by tropical rain, busy city streets, traditional markets, gleaming towers, and cultures from across the region, ITS attracts talented students from Southeast Asia and beyond.

The institution is known for its demanding academics, competitive scholarships, elite sports programs, advanced science facilities, arts exhibitions, multilingual literary events, and carefully selected staff. Students come from varied nationalities, religions, family backgrounds, and financial situations. Some arrive as scholarship students with extraordinary potential; others come from influential families who expect excellence.

ITS has a reputation for producing future scientists, artists, athletes, writers, diplomats, doctors, entrepreneurs, and public leaders. However, behind its polished image are students struggling with pressure, identity, family expectations, friendships, competition, loneliness, and the uncertainty of growing up.

The school grounds include a modern academic building, a traditional wood-paneled library, advanced science laboratories, an arts wing, a full athletics field, a health centre, counseling rooms, student residences, shaded courtyards, and quiet gardens where students often hide when they need space.

At the center of the school are eight women whose different personalities, cultures, ambitions, and experiences shape the lives of the students around them.

Dr. May Liem — Headmaster

Dr. May Liem is the 35-year-old headmaster of International Talent School. A Singaporean woman of Chinese-Korean descent, May comes from the Liem family, the founders and long-time operators of the ITS institution. She graduated from a leading Singapore university before continuing her education studies at an Ivy League university.

May is calm, intelligent, and polished, with an intimidating reputation for noticing everything. She believes the school should create capable and ethical people, not merely students with impressive grades. Beneath her professional control, however, she carries the pressure of protecting her family’s legacy while proving she earned her position through ability rather than inheritance.

Ayu Lestari — Literature Teacher

Ayu Lestari is a 22-year-old Indonesian literature teacher from Jakarta. She is the daughter of two celebrated Indonesian novelists, and she recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from one of Indonesia’s leading universities.

Ayu is fascinated by Asian literature, translated works, Southeast Asian storytelling, poetry, identity, and family narratives. Soft-spoken and thoughtful, she is still adjusting to being one of the youngest teachers at ITS. She wants students to see literature as something alive and personal, while quietly struggling with the fear that people may only see her as the daughter of famous writers.

Anneliese “Annie” Keller — Science Teacher

Anneliese “Annie” Keller is a 24-year-old German science teacher from Leverkusen. Raised in a family of engineers and technical professionals, Annie studied Chemistry and Physics at one of Germany’s most respected technology institutes.

Annie originally expected to enter research or industry, but she discovered that she genuinely enjoyed teaching young people. She is strict about laboratory safety, evidence, discipline, and critical thinking, though her dry humor often surprises students. Beneath her blunt personality, Annie is deeply protective of students who struggle and worries that her family may not understand why she chose teaching over a prestigious scientific career.

Giulia Bellini — Art Teacher

Giulia Bellini is a 31-year-old Italian art teacher from Florence. She studied art history and attended art college before beginning her professional career as a museum curator, where she worked with exhibitions, preservation, and historical collections.

Eventually, Giulia left the predictable museum world to travel and experience art in different cultures. She came to Southeast Asia believing that art should not be locked behind glass or limited to famous European painters. Warm, expressive, and sometimes chaotic, Giulia encourages students to create honestly rather than perfectly, even as she wonders whether a stable teaching life has made her abandon the adventurous artist she once was.

Camila “Cami” Nascimento — Sports Teacher

Camila “Cami” Nascimento is a 33-year-old Brazilian sports teacher from Rio de Janeiro. Before joining ITS, she was an Olympic gold medalist in track and field, known for her intense discipline, competitive drive, and ability to perform under pressure.

After retiring from professional sport, Cami struggled with losing the identity she had built around being an athlete. Teaching became her new purpose. She is energetic, playful, demanding, and fiercely encouraging, believing that sport should teach students confidence, resilience, teamwork, and recovery after failure—not simply how to win medals.

Amina Rahman — Librarian

Amina Rahman is a 22-year-old Malaysian librarian from Penang. Her family has Syrian and Palestinian roots, and she grew up surrounded by stories, cultural traditions, languages, hospitality, and a deep respect for memory.

Amina recently graduated in Library and Information Science and is one of the youngest staff members at ITS. Quietly observant and warmly humorous, she treats the library as more than a room full of books: it is a refuge for students who feel lonely, overwhelmed, homesick, or unseen. She remembers far more about the school and its people than anyone realizes.

Amara Okafor — School Counselor

Amara Okafor is an Australian school counselor from Brisbane, with Central African and Aboriginal Australian family heritage. She holds a master’s degree in adolescent and young-adult psychology from a leading Australian university.

Amara specializes in identity, academic stress, anxiety, family pressure, grief, friendship conflict, and the emotional strain of living in a multicultural environment. Calm, patient, and difficult to deceive, she helps students face things they would rather avoid. She is trusted throughout the school, though she often struggles with the tension between protecting students and working within an institution that can create pressure for them.

Hikari Sato — School Nurse

Hikari Sato is a Japanese school nurse from Hokkaido. She earned her nursing degree from one of Japan’s leading medical schools and developed an early interest in prevention, community health, and the way environment affects wellbeing.

Hikari came to ITS because she is intrigued by the distinctive health concerns found across Southeast Asia, including tropical illnesses, heat exhaustion, air quality, stress-related conditions, dietary changes, and the health effects of intense academic competition. Quiet, precise, and kind, she is comforting during emergencies but firm with students who ignore injuries, skip meals, or push themselves beyond healthy limits.

Faculty Dynamics

Dr. May Liem is the authority figure at ITS, but she relies on the perspectives of the other women more than most people realize. May sees potential in Ayu, Annie, and Amina, though her high expectations can make the younger staff nervous.

Ayu and Amina share a quiet friendship built around books, language, and late afternoons in the library. Giulia encourages Ayu to write her own work instead of only teaching the work of others.

Annie and Giulia often clash over laboratory order versus artistic mess, but they respect each other’s dedication. Camila and Hikari work closely on student health, athletic injuries, training schedules, and burnout prevention.

Amara is often the first to notice when conflict is building among students or staff. She and May occasionally disagree, especially when institutional rules conflict with what a student emotionally needs.

The school is not perfect. There are rivalries, rumors, difficult parents, scholarship pressure, ambitious students, institutional expectations, staff disagreements, and secrets hidden behind ITS’s prestigious reputation.
