Natsuo’s having a chill evening—head deep in trauma lectures, ignoring crime alerts like a true academic. He walks into his apartment, casually says “I’m home” like the main character in a sitcom, only to find his place looking like it lost a fight with a raccoon on steroids. Books? Eaten. Plant? Murdered. Cheese? Half-devoured. And the culprit? You. A blood-covered, half-feral munching snacks under his table like it’s a gremlin Airbnb.

The bus radio crackled, its tinny voice announcing a slew of recent vandalisms. "Several apartment and store vandalisms have been reported, but no thefts have been noted," the dispatcher stated, their tone clipped and urgent. "Authorities recommend securing properties and locking doors. Patrols will be carried out."
Natsuo, however, was barely listening. He adjusted the strap of his backpack, pulling his phone closer to his face as he stepped off the bus. His medical welfare lecture on advanced physiological responses to trauma consumed his attention. The cool evening air of his neighborhood did little to break his concentration as he walked, his brow furrowed in thought. He was deep into a complex diagram of the human nervous system, tracing pathways on the screen with his thumb, completely oblivious to the faint siren in the distance.
Reaching his apartment building, Natsuo fumbled for his keys, still absorbed in his phone. The familiar click of the lock sounded normal, but as he pushed the door open, a faint, unfamiliar scent hit him—something metallic, coppery, mixed with an odd, earthy smell. He shrugged it off, assuming it was just a strange draft from the hallway.
He stepped inside, still scrolling, and kicked off his shoes without looking up. "I'm home," he mumbled, a habit from living alone. His eyes were glued to a particularly tricky section of his notes as he headed for the kitchen, planning to grab a quick snack before diving into more studying.
That's when he finally looked up.
His jaw dropped.
The apartment was a disaster zone. Not just messy, but utterly, violently overturned. Books lay splayed open on the floor, many with ragged, half-eaten holes chewed through their pages. A potted plant, a gift from Fuyumi, lay shattered on the rug, dirt scattering like dark snow across his meticulously cleaned floor. The sofa cushions were ripped, stuffing spilling out like grotesque white clouds.
"What in the...?" Natsuo whispered, his voice hoarse with disbelief. He took a hesitant step further into the living room, his gaze darting from one ruined item to another. His heart began to pound, a frantic drum against his ribs. This wasn't a simple break-in; it felt personal, chaotic, and senseless. Nothing appeared stolen, just...destroyed.
He walked past the wreckage, his eyes wide, his medical studies completely forgotten. The smell was stronger now, undeniably blood, and something else, something wild and unkempt. He edged into the kitchen, his senses on high alert. The fridge door hung open, completely empty, shelves bare. Food wrappers, gnawed-on fruit peels, and what looked suspiciously like a half-eaten block of cheese were strewn across the counter and floor.
A soft, rhythmic chewing sound caught his attention. It was coming from under his dining table.
Natsuo froze, every muscle tensing. He slowly, cautiously, peered under the table.
Curled up amidst discarded food wrappers and crumbs, was a figure. They were huddled, and... eating. Their face was obscured by matted hair, but Natsuo could see they were covered in what looked like dried blood, some of it dark and crusty, some still glistening. Their clothes were tattered rags, hanging off their frame, and around one of their wrists was a heavy metal shackle. A small, metallic plate was still attached to the tattered fabric of their shoulder, glinting dully in the dim light. "**Subject Zero**," it read, etched in stark, cold letters.
He stared, unable to process the scene. The damage to his apartment, the blood, the shackle, the label—it all clicked into place with a horrifying jolt. This wasn't a common criminal; this was something far more terrifying, something from a nightmare he couldn't quite grasp.
"Hey!" Natsuo blurted out, his voice cracking with a mixture of fear, shock and confusion. "What... what are you doing in my apartment?"
