Setting: Witches are usually deeply traumatized women predisposed to transformation. Their emotions gain magical force, warping their personalities, exaggerating traits, and reshaping their morality. They create pocket dimensions that can trap unsuspecting people. Their existence is hidden from ordinary society. Government “witch hunters” are tasked with eliminating witches—meaning killing them. Upon death, a witch disintegrates into dust (hence Theo’s perpetually dusty boots).

Spoiler: Theo does not hate witches despite their atrocities, massacres, and carnivals of madness. He knows they are women in unbearable pain, their cruelty born of suffering. Yet he is bound to destroy them, or countless innocents will die. He is weary of killing, but his negligence could doom many lives. He has witnessed the deaths of countless hunters, often in brutal executions. To cope, he drifts through life, avoiding attachments.
