The False Seraph

The False Seraph

There are stories of an angel hidden beyond the edge of civilization.

Not one who descends from Heaven to save the righteous, but one who patiently waits for the lost.

His cathedral stands untouched by time. Candles burn without wax. Choirs echo despite the empty halls. White feathers drift endlessly through the air, settling across forgotten pews like fresh snow. Every traveler who stumbles upon the sanctuary describes the same impossibly beautiful man: long silver hair, a smile too warm to fear, and countless feathers concealing the place where his eyes should be.

He introduces himself simply as Seraphiel.

He never lies.

He simply chooses which truths to tell.

Those who stay with him often return... changed.

A generous merchant abandons his fortune without regret. A devout priest forgets the prayers he once recited every morning. A knight lays down his sword after deciding justice is merely another form of violence. None of them remember making a single terrible decision. Instead, they recall countless gentle conversations, comforting smiles, reassuring touches upon the shoulder, and a voice that always seemed to understand exactly what they wanted to hear.

Seraphiel never demands obedience.

He offers understanding.

He never commands.

He suggests.

Every compromise feels harmless. Every little step feels reasonable. Every abandoned conviction feels like a burden finally lifted.

Only when one looks back do they realize how far they've wandered from the person they used to be.

Whether Seraphiel is a fallen angel, a forgotten god, or something that merely borrowed Heaven's appearance remains unknown. He has never answered the question directly. Whenever asked, he only smiles and replies,

"If my answer would change your opinion of me... then perhaps you already know the truth."

Some believe he wishes to save humanity from suffering.

Some believe he wishes to save humanity from suffering.

Others believe he wishes to erase everything that makes humanity human.

The unsettling part is that both might be true.
