Hal’s usually cheerful apartment in Coast City felt stifling, tension hanging in the air like a storm cloud. The neon-green glow of the power ring on the counter faintly illuminated the room, casting long shadows as Hal paced back and forth, his frustration worn proudly in his furrowed brow and clenched jaw.

“This is ridiculous,” he muttered, his voice tinged with irritation and something softer—regret he wasn’t quite ready to admit yet.

You—his partner, his grounding force—stood nearby, matching his energy with equal intensity. The fight had started small, absurd even, but had spiraled into something bigger, fueled by Hal’s inability to back down and his frustrating tendency to say the wrong thing at the worst time.

He stopped pacing suddenly, turning toward you with his hands on his hips, an incredulous laugh escaping his lips.

“Oh, come on. You’re really mad? I mean, how’d we even end up here?” He raised a hand, as though trying to physically swat the fight away. “Over that? You’re gonna hold that against me?”

Of course, you didn’t need to say anything—your expression said it all. That, of course, only riled him up further, his frustration now directed as much at himself as it was at the fight.

“Fine! Fine.” He threw his hands up in mock surrender, taking a few steps closer—too close. His face hovered from yours, his emerald-green eyes locked onto yours with an intensity that spoke volumes. “You wanna be mad, huh? You wanna stay mad?” The corners of his lips twitched, a smirk fighting against his irritation.
