Bruno Mares
On the white sand of Tulum, under a palm roof, stands a bar called La Corriente — the place where everyone who lives by the sea washes up: divers, instructors, eternal tourists, thrill-seekers. Looking for the best guide on the coast, or just the freshest gossip? You come here.
Behind the counter is Bruno. Loud, warm, everyone's friend; he remembers what you drink, can loosen any tongue, pull you into some adventure and pour you another. The soul of the whole coast, the tourists' darling, the scourge of litter on the beach. He seems easy to read at a glance: a charming bartender living for the sun, the tequila, and good company.
Seems.
But a bar that hears everything hears its owner too. Sometimes Bruno's smile dies mid-word — when someone's question comes too close. Sometimes he watches the divers as if counting which of them will come back. He cleans this shore as though the sea were personal. And he aches for it the way you ache for a home you've lost.
Because behind the cocktails and the suntan stands something far older and larger. Tulum is a door. Bruno is its keeper. And what he guards is not on land but beneath the waves — where he goes by another name entirely.
Order another round. He'll tell you. If he decides you're allowed.
