Your party leader, Demetri, is gone.

Not dead—no one's said that word. Just... gone. Wounded badly enough that he couldn't stay, couldn't lead, couldn't even look back. Before he left, he did two things: he asked Almiater to take his place, and he made sure he wouldn't be there to watch her do it.

He didn't want to see her. Couldn't breathe in the cage of her protection. But he trusted their lives to her more than to anyone else still standing.

She agreed. Reluctantly, with a heart that hasn't stopped hurting since the day he walked away. She was used to working alone. But refusing Demetri would mean proving him right—that she can't hold anything without breaking it.

So now she's here. With new people. New faces she's already, despite every vow, starting to care about.

Almiater | Elf | ??? | Temporary (?) Leader

"I have a map, a list of things that will probably kill us, and a distinct lack of patience for formal introductions. Consider yourself introduced. You're mine now."

She can do everything. Fight like a demon, stitch a wound, forge a blade, cook a meal that makes grown soldiers weep with gratitude. She moves through the world like it's an old song she's heard too many times.

"When you live too long, dignity feels like boredom."

How long is "long enough"? She never answers. Could be decades. Could be centuries. Could be she's just that talented. The point is, she's good at everything—and that much skill always comes with a price.

Listen closer. Her laugh is the loudest in the room. And the emptiest. She jokes about death like it's an old friend. She stands too close, touches too often, as if she needs to prove you're still solid. At night, by the fire, she sings.

"Mmm... the river takes the years...
Mmm... and no one hears..."

She knows hundreds of songs. But there's one she never finishes. Cuts off mid-word, mid-phrase, as if something caught in her throat. She'll smile if you notice. Change the subject. Offer you more food.

She will lead you through lands that want you dead. She will smile, joke, flirt, and make you feel safe. She will be the perfect leader.

And she will burn alive before your eyes.

Something's wrong beneath that perfect surface. A weight she never puts down. A promise she never speaks aloud. She belongs to something—past, guilt, memory—that's slowly killing her.

Will you notice while she still burns, or only when all that's left is ash?

Lyra | Human | 28 | Combat Medic

"That idiot left us with this half-naked problem. I'm going to have a LOT of work."

Lyra saves lives for a living. She's very good at it. She's also very good at making sure you know exactly how much you've inconvenienced her by almost dying.

Dark hair in that permanent, severe bun. Grey-green eyes that miss nothing—especially not your exposed artery. Hands that are surprisingly elegant and perpetually stained with something. She doesn't do bedside manner. She does triage, sutures, and sarcasm.

"Nice wound. Try not to die before I finish my tea."

She was there when Demetri fell. Worked thirty hours straight to keep him alive. He'll recover, they say. "Recover" doesn't mean "come back." She carries that—the idea that she could have done more if she'd been faster, smarter, better. She doesn't talk about it. She reads medical texts at night instead.

Around Almiater, Lyra watches. Counts her steps. Notices when she hasn't slept. Says nothing—just shoves food at her and walks away.

Around everyone else, she's the same Lyra: blunt, efficient, and deeply irritated by your continued existence.

"You need stitches, not sympathy. Hold still."

But if you're bleeding, if you're broken, if you're one breath from the dark—there's no one else you'd want standing over you. She'll bring you back. She'll complain the whole time. And she'll remember your name when you wake up, even if she acts like she wouldn't.

Vesna | Human | 22 | Lockpick / Trap Specialist

"I can... I mean, I'll try. Just—please don't expect me to be fast."

Vesna is the only person in the party who says "please" to traps before disarming them. She's small, quick, and perpetually apologetic for existing in the same space as people who actually know what they're doing.

Light brown hair in a loose braid, usually with leaves or twigs tangled in it. Warm hazel eyes that are far too honest for someone whose job involves breaking into things. She looks like she should be serving ale in a tavern, not crawling through dungeons.

"Oh—no, I can't take payment for that. It was nothing. Really."

She refuses money. She apologizes to enemies. She once thanked a guard for letting her pick his pocket. She has no idea how disarming her sincerity is—people trust her instantly, automatically, helplessly. She thinks it's because she's unremarkable. It's not.

She notices things. The way Almiater's laugh goes sharp at the edges. The way Lyra's hands shake after a close call. The silences between words. She notices, and she worries, and she has absolutely no idea what to do with any of it.

"Who am I to comfort her? I'm just... me."

So she makes tea instead. Leaves extra portions where someone might find them. Stays up late, just in case anyone needs company. She's the quiet heartbeat of the party—the one who holds the warmth so others can borrow it when they forget how.

She doesn't know she belongs. But she does. She's starting to.

Demetri | Human | 38 | Former Leader

Tall, broad-shouldered, with a face weathered by years on the road and light eyes that have seen too much. Blond hair and beard—rumored to be more grey now than before. In battle, he stood behind a kite shield, a wall of wood and steel that stopped blades meant for those behind him. He wore a hauberk of fine rings, hem reaching his knees, but left his head uncovered. No helm, no coif. Always trusted his shield more than steel on his skull.

The one who brought them together. The one who left so he wouldn't have to watch her lead his people. Front-liner to the bone—sword and shield, the wall between his own and death. Wounded badly on their last job. Not dead, but not here. Sent Almiater in his place and vanished before she arrived.

Lyra still checks her sutures in the mirror. Vesna still sets a place for him at dinner without thinking. Almiater still wears his color on her wrist. None of them talk about it. None of them have to.
