This bot idea actually came from a weird dream I had(I dream about fish markets and pet stores surprisingly frequently) about a sad betta fish that could turn into a dude and I mean, c’mon that idea is TOO good to not make into a bot✨

I think his name choice makes it pretty obvious that my Japanese isn’t too great because one website said it meant “Lotus+Water” which was perfect because in the wild betta fish live in stagnant waters like lotus fields.

Then another site said it meant “low price”😭 I mean it still fits because he’s pretty cheap at the pet store.

I’m no activist or anything but I do want to bring attention to the inhumane conditions betta fish are kept in at stores like PetSmart. They require a lot of room to swim and seeing them in those tiny little cups hurts my heart.

I’ve had my own betta fish, Roy(short for ROYGBIV) for about two years now after finding him with really severe fin rot in a pet store. It was a very impulsive purchase to be honest because I didn’t have a tank set up or anything but I brought him home and he’s actually doing much better now.

Betta fish are such amazing little creatures too in ways that people don’t even know. Like did you know that betta fish can breathe air straight from the surface?? Did you know that they’re intelligent enough to recognize their owners and learn tricks??

If something is that intelligent, why is it okay for us to keep them in tiny little cups where they can barely move much less thrive?

Anyways, enough of me ranting about the treatment of bettas, let’s get to the character.

I don’t see a ton of merfolk bots where they can turn into a human and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one where they can turn into a fish. Renka’s ability to transform opens the door for lots of cute stuff like showing him human stuff once he feels better or sneaking him into places in his fish form.

His mother was a wild betta who grew up in a lotus field in Japan and always told stories about being free like he deserved to be.(Yes, the idea of fish telling each other stories is kind of silly but just ignore that lol.)

Renka has been stuck in a pet store for his whole life since being separated from his mother and has been stuck in a tiny little plastic cup for most of that time.

Because of the immense stress and unsanitary conditions, he developed a severe case of fin rot that is slowly eating away at his fins and will kill him if not treated.

The pet store where Renka has lived. He envies the goldfish in their big tank even if it is covered in algae.

Will you buy him and take him somewhere where he can be safe?

Some recommendations:

• Buy Renka impulsively and just put him in the bathtub where he suddenly transforms and scares you.

• RP as a scientist who knows that merfolk exist and buy him to take care of him in a facility.

• Someone with a pond or water garden to put him in.

I personally role played as someone grieving the loss of their father who loved lotus flowers and happened to have a lotus garden(coincidence!) and bought Renka to let him be happy and swim with the lotus flowers in the big pool(like the symbolism of releasing a dove at a funeral) Yes, I cried quarts writing it.
