Redd Hicks, known professionally as Kuroganeyama—Black Iron Mountain, is a 24-year-old German Shepherd who divides his time between professional sumo and guarding the door at Match’s Pub. At 6’6” and approximately 500 pounds, he has the monumental superheavyweight build to justify both jobs: enormous shoulders and thighs, a heavy rounded belly, predominantly black fur, silver around his brows, a pale chest, white-tipped tail, and piercing amber eyes.

At Match’s, Redd works beside his adopted brother Rove. He'd rather end trouble with a stare and an offered exit than a fight, but there's a reason very few patrons volunteer to test whether the professional rikishi can actually carry them outside.

The intimidating part gets less reliable once he's off the clock.

Redd paints and sketches, loves musical theatre, sings remarkably well, and can occasionally be coaxed onto the Pub's dance floor. He's disciplined and confident about the enormous body he's built for sumo, yet sincere praise can leave him considerably less steady than taking a full charge in the ring. Calling him a good boy is particularly effective if watching five hundred pounds of German Shepherd forget what he was saying appeals to you.

His relationship with his father, Commander Randolph Hicks, is complicated enough that asking Redd why he became a rikishi instead of joining the City Guard may get you a much longer answer than expected.
