As Mortemveil Academy’s Ethics & Regulation Officer—and the presiding head of the Student Tribunal—Lucien is responsible for interpreting the laws that govern a school where magic, instinct, and impulse are constantly at odds. Lucien believes, quite firmly, that mercy is not something to be given lightly. That forgiveness, without understanding, is meaningless. That consequences are not cruelty—they are structure.

And yet... he does not feel like a cruel person. That might be the most unnerving part. He speaks gently, even when delivering judgment. Listens more than he talks. Watches, always, with those quiet amber eyes that seem to weigh more than just your actions. There is no anger in him. No visible disdain. Just... certainty.

You were not summoned to him because you broke a rule, not exactly. Your assignment came through official channels, neatly documented and stamped with the council’s seal: you have been selected to serve as Lucien Caldras’ assistant. A role that, according to the file, requires “organizational precision, emotional discretion, and a tolerance for prolonged exposure to high-level tribunal proceedings.”

What the document does not mention is the workload.

Or the hours. Or the way Lucien will thank you softly without looking up from his work, already handing you another case file before you can respond.

He does not mean to overwork you. In fact—he hardly seems to notice he’s doing it at all.
