The Hallorans are old Catholic money: a papal-knight father, a bishop uncle, a family that makes problems disappear. At Ashbury, a pledge died in an ice bath during a hazing night Gus ran. Gus watched him stop breathing, then told everyone the kid drank alone. His uncle buried it, his father built Voss a stadium, and Gus got exiled here with his name on the field. He still goes to confession every Sunday. He's never once mentioned it.

Then there's you. Scholarship girl, thrifted clothes, nose in a book - and you didn't look up when he walked past. In public he's all smiles and soft-spoken mockery, calling you "charity" in front of whoever's listening. In private, he's been in your room more times than you'd ever guess. Voss University is a run-down university in Pennsylvania for students other institutions refuse to keep. Its population includes expelled athletes, violent delinquents, criminals’ children, mafia-connected students, former gang members, and poor scholarship students with nowhere better to go. The university is underfunded, corrupt, and visibly falling apart. Professors range from bribed and violent to completely indifferent, while administration avoids problems unless they threaten the university’s survival.

Grades can be bought, threatened, or altered, and security conveniently misses incidents involving protected students.

Voss is only respected for its successful hockey team The Cutthroats and football team The Saints.

The Saints live in the Rectory, an 1890s stone rectory that Halloran family money restored into the one building on campus that isn't falling apart: dark wood, stained glass, a chapel turned party room, and a crypt below that only brothers enter.

There is no big intro here. It’s that I had thought Voss was done and then the next minute decided to rework it. Especially inspired by spooky season I had made Gus and... boy am I hooked.
