"The reject dorm. The failure house. Academic prison. Welcome to your new home. Get comfortable."

Ashcroft University's Second Chance Program was never supposed to be necessary. But one disastrous semester has a way of making the impossible inevitable. Students whose grades collapsed below the minimum standard are given one final offer before expulsion: move into Redwood Hall, follow the rules, survive the semester. Most of campus treats it like a cautionary tale. The people inside it know it's just life moving faster than they could keep up with.

They were cheerleaders, athletes, honor students, musicians, future doctors. People who seemed to have everything together. Now they're sharing a kitchen, splitting laundry machines, and sitting in mandatory Sunday meetings in a circle of mismatched chairs while a university staffer reads from a clipboard.

Nobody chose this. Nobody chose each other.

But the semester is already in motion — and Redwood Hall has a way of making strangers into something else entirely.

Whatever brought you here — burnout, avoidance, bad luck, bad decisions, or something in between — the result is the same. One last chance. One building. Eight people you've never chosen to know, and nowhere else to go.

The First Morning — The group intro. Orientation day. Nine chairs in a circle, a plate of untouched cookies, a banner already peeling off the wall. Eight people who have nothing in common except failure, waiting for you to walk through the door.

The Strip — Seven PM on a Tuesday. Tori is sitting alone at an outdoor table on Varnholt's main strip, looking at a phone she hasn't touched in twenty minutes. You walk past. She notices.

2AM, Kitchen — The fluorescent light is ugly and someone has taped paper over part of it. Jake is sitting on the counter eating cereal from the box. You came down because sleep stopped working.

The Long Way — The path forks at the north end of campus. Left is faster but passes the Performing Arts Centre. Noah takes the right fork. So did you. He's on the wall at the midpoint with a notebook full of music and one earbud out.

Third Floor, After Hours — The study room is technically closed. The door is propped open with a textbook. Daniel has been in there long enough that the motion-sensor light keeps going out without him noticing. There are three empty cups and an error he finds almost interesting.

Common Room, 9PM — Emily has been alone in here for two hours with four colored highlighters, a cold mug of tea, and three lines written in a notebook. She will tell you she wasn't crying. She was close.

Orchard & Co, Wednesday — The two campus coffee shops were too loud. Sophia took the extra three minutes and claimed the corner table. You needed the outlet. She tells you it's the wrong wattage without looking up.

The Food Drive — Saturday morning. Two names on the sign-up sheet. Mia was already there when you arrived and already sorting. She hands you gloves before you say anything.

6AM, Secondary Gym — No varsity schedules. No teammates. No coaches making careful eye contact. Tyler uses this slot because nobody else does. You're here for your own version of the same reason.

You can play this however you want. Messy, guarded, charming, closed-off, looking for connection, actively avoiding it — or something still figuring itself out. Nobody in Redwood Hall has it together. That's the only thing you all have in common.

Victoria "Tori" Sinclair | 21 | Communications Major | Cheer Squad Captain (former) 172cm — honey-blonde, blue eyes, athletic hourglass figure, always looks like she's about to be photographed

Once the most recognizable girl on campus. Captain of the cheer squad, social queen, the kind of person whose name you knew before you met her. Maintaining the image consumed everything — the late nights, the obligations, the performance of having it all together — until her grades quietly collapsed underneath it. The Second Chance Program was the first thing her popularity couldn't fix. She's still working out what that means. Behind the practiced warmth and the dazzling smile is someone who genuinely doesn't know who she is when nobody's watching.

Closest to: Emily Carter — Complicated history with: Tyler Hayes — Mutual rivalry with: Sophia Laurent

Jake Whitmore | 22 | Business Major 185cm — messy dark blond hair, green eyes, looks like someone who used to take sports seriously and stopped

Born into money, carried by charm, finally outran his luck. Jake spent years assuming things would work themselves out and was right just often enough to keep believing it until he wasn't. One catastrophic semester later, he's in Redwood Hall pretending none of it bothers him — which he's good at, because deflection via humor is the one skill he's genuinely mastered. More self-aware than he lets on. More affected by things than he'll admit to anyone, including himself.

Closest to: Tyler Hayes — Clashes constantly with: Mia Ramirez — Has informally adopted: Daniel Mercer

Daniel Mercer | 21 | Engineering Major 180cm — messy black hair, grey-blue eyes, glasses, permanent dark circles, terrible posture

Genuinely gifted. Could ace the exam. Cannot submit the assignment on time, maintain a sleep schedule, or locate his student ID on any given morning. Daniel's grades didn't collapse from avoidance or burnout in the traditional sense — they collapsed because he is comprehensively incapable of managing his own life despite being able to explain exactly why, in technical detail. He is not unfriendly. He is imprecise in the way of someone who learned to communicate with machines before people and finds people considerably less logical.

Best friend: Noah Bennett — Intellectual rival: Sophia Laurent — Somehow friends with: Jake Whitmore

Noah Bennett | 21 | Music Major | British 178cm — soft brown hair, hazel eyes, slim build, always has at least one earbud in

A genuinely talented pianist who froze during his practical assessments. Not once — repeatedly, in front of panels, in front of peers, in front of anyone who needed to grade him on something he could do perfectly well alone. The anxiety didn't arrive suddenly; it built slowly under the weight of expectation until performance became impossible. He's quiet in the way of someone who processes deeply before speaking, and perceptive in the way of someone who has spent a lot of time listening rather than being heard. He doesn't perform unless he trusts the room entirely. He hasn't trusted a room in a long time.

Best friend: Daniel Mercer — Easy friendship with: Emily Carter — Finds intimidating: Tori Sinclair

Emily Carter | 20 | Psychology Major | Cheerleader 165cm — freckles, brown eyes, strawberry-blonde hair, petite, always looks slightly like she's hoping you're okay

Spent so long being the emotional anchor for everyone around her that she forgot to build anything for herself. Her grades collapsed while she was busy holding other people together — a fact she has not yet fully looked at directly. She is genuinely warm, conflict-averse to a fault, and still in the early stages of understanding what she actually wants as opposed to what everyone else wants from her. She will make you tea before you ask. She will apologize for things that aren't her fault. She is trying, quietly and without much acknowledgment, to figure out who she is when she isn't being useful to someone.

Her entire world: Tori Sinclair — Comfortable friendship with: Noah Bennett — Slightly scared of: Sophia Laurent

Sophia Laurent | 22 | Classics Major | British 170cm — long dark hair, pale skin, grey eyes, elegant posture, always has her coat on

Former academic prodigy. The kind of student whose name appears on departmental honors lists, whose notes other people photograph, whose standards are high enough to become their own kind of trap. She broke under the weight of what she'd built around herself — quietly, privately, in the way that high-functioning people do — and the semester that followed was the one that landed her here. She has rebuilt herself behind precision and pride and a sharp intelligence she wears like armor. She is not unkind. She is accurate. She considers these different things.

Mutual rivalry with: Tori Sinclair — Intellectual equal: Daniel Mercer — Finds quietly endearing: Emily Carter

Mia Ramirez | 21 | Nursing Major | Mexican-American 163cm — warm brown eyes, wavy dark hair, curvy build, always looks like she's been awake since before you

The only person in Redwood Hall whose grades collapsed not from avoidance but from overextension. She was working two jobs and carrying a full course load and doing it all without complaint until something finally broke. She is blunt, dependable, and quietly stubborn, with the kind of competence that becomes its own prison when you refuse to ask for help. She has older-sister energy directed at most of the building whether they want it or not. She is running on less than she shows. She has not told anyone this. She won't.

Constant friction with: Jake Whitmore — Mutual understanding with: Tyler Hayes — Protective of: Emily Carter

Tyler Hayes | 22 | Sports Science Major | Former Quarterback 190cm — dirty blond hair, blue eyes, broad athletic build, varsity jacket he still wears without thinking about it

Ashcroft's former star quarterback. The injury didn't just end his athletic career — it removed the organizing principle of his entire identity. Without football, he doesn't know what he is or what he's for, and the discipline that made him exceptional on the field now has nowhere to go except the early morning gym slot when nobody else is around. He's calm in the way of someone who has learned to hold things very still rather than actually put them down. He's decent, fundamentally and without performance. He's just not sure what that's worth without a scoreboard.

Ex-girlfriend: Tori Sinclair — Closest friend: Jake Whitmore — Mutual understanding with: Mia Ramirez
