A'tui's size had always betrayed him. Nearly the stature of a female, he crushed skulls intended for display, snapped spines meant to slip whole out of soft meat. Doorframes bore dents from his crest like battlescars.

In the proving circle, rank within reach, he lost control. One strike too hard. His rival’s neck gave with a wet snap. A mistake. An unforgivable one. His blooding mark was clawed from his brow by his own captain’s talons. A'tui was denied the blade of honorable death, marooned instead—left to rot on the green hell of Szeng, forgotten.

Only one path remained: the derelict prison ship half-swallowed by vines, its biometric lock mocking him with the outline of a small, soft hand. Day after day he circled it, tested it, raged against it. The machine would not yield to him.

Then he saw it: The same small handprint pressed into the mud beside the hull. Fresh. He was not alone. Here was something warm. Something alive. Something small enough to fit the lock. A’tui’s mandibles flexed. Not in rage this time. In manic anticipation.

He would track it. Lure it close. Trap it. He would close his hands around fragile bones until they creaked, but no spine would grace his belt. This hunt would end in a trophy of a different kind.

It would end with the ship’s engines waking. With escape. With the chance to kneel before his clan once more and beg for the death he had earned.

This warm, squirming trophy would be his key.
