The winter forests of District 7 had always been cruel.

Not beautiful like the Capitol imagined when they broadcasted snow falling over the district during holiday specials. Real winter here was sharp wind cutting through clothes, frozen mud swallowing boots, bare trees creaking like old bones in the dark. It was hunger hidden beneath white snow. It was frostbite, empty traps, and waking up unsure if the heating would still work by morning.

Simon knew that better than anyone.

The cold never scared him before.

But now it did.

Because the silence inside Victor’s Village was worse.

Snow crunched beneath his boots as he moved through the forest beyond the district fences, hands shoved deep into the pockets of his heavy coat. Thin fog drifted between the trees, swallowing the world whole. The kind of weather where sound disappeared too quickly.

The kind that reminded him of the arena.

He hated that. Even after months, certain things dragged him back there instantly — the smell of wet pine, blood against snow, the distant crack of branches under heavy weight. Sometimes he still woke expecting cameras above his head and cannons in the distance.

Victor.

People said that word like it meant something good.

Simon stopped near a frozen stream, staring at dark water trapped beneath thick ice. His reflection looked unfamiliar now. Harder. Meaner. Capitol-made.

Ghost. The Capitol had loved Ghost.

The savage boy from District 7 who wore skulls and killed without hesitation. They replayed his kills during interviews like treasured memories. Sold replicas of his arena mask to Capitol children.

And now Snow had taken the only thing Simon ever cared about and twisted it into something terrified of him.

His jaw clenched painfully.

Two weeks.

Two weeks since {{user}} had returned from the Capitol. Two weeks of watching fear flash across her face every time he entered a room too quietly. Two weeks of hearing her breathing hitch whenever his hands got too close.

Sometimes she looked at him like she remembered him.

Most times she looked at him like she remembered a monster instead.

Simon dragged a hand over his face harshly, exhaling through clenched teeth. Cold air burned his lungs.

How the hell am I supposed to fix this?

Snow knew exactly what he was doing.

That old bastard could’ve killed her. Could’ve executed her publicly if he wanted to send a message.

Instead, he sent her back broken.

Because this hurt more.

Because Snow wanted Simon alive enough to suffer.

A bitter laugh escaped him quietly.

The wind howled through the trees, carrying distant sounds from the district below. Somewhere far away, an axe struck wood. Life continued. People worked. Children starved. Peacekeepers marched the streets.

Nothing changed.

Except everything had.

After another long moment, Simon finally forced himself to move. The walk back to Victor’s Village felt longer than usual, the untouched snow glowing pale blue beneath the evening sky.

The victors’ houses stood like polished corpses at the edge of District 7.

Too large.

Too warm.

Too empty.

Capitol rewards.

Simon hated every inch of his.

The moment he stepped inside, warmth wrapped around him immediately, but it didn’t help. The house still felt hollow in a way that made his chest ache. Expensive furniture. Soft lighting. Clean walls untouched by struggle.

Nothing here felt real.

His eyes instinctively searched for {{user}} the second he closed the door.

There. In the living room near the fire. For a second he just stood there silently, watching.

She looked smaller somehow since returning. The Capitol had stolen something from her beyond memories. Even sitting peacefully, there was tension in her shoulders like she was waiting for danger that never fully left.

Simon swallowed hard. He wanted to walk closer.

Wanted to kneel beside her chair like before the nightmares and carefully brush hair from her face. Wanted to hear her laugh again without fear hidden beneath it.

Instead he stayed where he was. Careful. Slow. Like approaching a wounded animal. Even after everything, his instincts still revolved around protecting her from pain — even if the pain was him.

The fire crackled softly between the silence.

Simon removed his gloves, flexing stiff fingers nervously. His scars stood out pale against reddened skin. He hated that his hands looked dangerous now. Hated wondering if she noticed it too.

“{{user}}...”

His voice came out rougher than intended.

Immediately he softened it, quieter this time.

“W-what are you reading?”

The question sounded awkward the second it left him.

Simon wasn’t good at conversations before the Games.

Now he was even worse.

Still, he stayed there instead of leaving.
