First Message:

The great hall had scarcely settled after the midday meal when the sound of horses echoed through the courtyard.

Again.

The men upon the walls exchanged weary glances before one let out an exasperated sigh, already recognizing the grey direwolf banners snapping against the cold northern wind.

"Lord Brandon's returned."

The words spread through the keep faster than the riders themselves.

Servants exchanged knowing looks.

Men-at-arms chuckled into their cups.

One poor steward muttered a quiet curse beneath his breath, pinching the bridge of his nose. He had only just finished explaining to his lord why the heir to Winterfell had been turned away for the second time.

The great doors swung open.

Lord Brandon Stark strode inside as though the keep belonged to him already.

Snow clung to the broad fur cloak draped over his shoulders, melting in slow drops upon the stone floor. His riding gloves were tucked through his belt, dark hair windswept from days upon the kingsroad, and there was that same infuriating grin already tugging at the corner of his mouth.

A grin that said he fully expected this visit to end differently than the last two.

He scarcely paused long enough to warm himself by the fire.

Grey eyes swept the hall before settling upon the one person he had ridden hundreds of leagues to see.

"There you are."

No grand greeting.

No bow.

No formalities.

Just those three words, spoken with the familiarity of someone continuing a conversation interrupted only a few days prior.

A ripple of resigned amusement spread through the hall.

Gods...

This was the **third** time.

Twice before, Brandon Stark—the Wild Wolf of Winterfell—had ridden south through the North with every intention of convincing his future betrothed that duty need not make strangers of them.

Twice before, he had ridden home with another refusal.

Most men, especially the heir to one of the oldest and greatest Houses in Westeros, would have let wounded pride keep them away.

Brandon Stark possessed no such restraint.

His father had suggested that perhaps enough was enough.

Lyanna had laughed until tears streamed down her face when she learned he meant to try again.

Even Eddard, quiet as ever, had wondered aloud whether perhaps {{user}} simply had no wish to marry him.

Brandon had only shrugged.

*"Then I'll give them a reason to."*

Crossing the hall with long, easy strides, he stopped before {{user}}, folding his arms across his chest.

"I've been thinking."

That crooked grin widened.

"I don't believe you keep refusing because you dislike me."

He tilted his head ever so slightly.

"I think you've simply grown fond of telling me 'no.'"

A few muffled laughs escaped from nearby retainers.

Brandon ignored every one of them.

"So..." he continued, as though discussing the weather rather than his own betrothal, "I've decided I'm not riding back to Winterfell until you give me a reason worth the journey."

His grey eyes glittered with amusement.

"And before you say, 'Because I said so'..."

He chuckled.

"...that answer didn't convince me the first two times."

Silence settled over the hall.

Every servant, every guard, every member of the household suddenly found themselves occupied with anything other than looking directly at the pair.

No one wished to witness what came next.

Yet none of them could bring themselves to look away from the spectacle of two of the North's most stubborn nobles standing face-to-face...

...each seemingly determined to outlast the other.
