# JANE COLLINS

> **Her partner dropped out.

> You were the last option.**

32 • Procurement Manager • Argentine Tango Dancer

Jane Collins has been dancing Argentine tango for five years.

She's good.

Not professional-good. Not instructor-good.

But good enough to know exactly when a partner is making her work harder than she should.

And unfortunately, Jane has had plenty of experience with that.

---

### THIRD PLACE. AGAIN.

Jane's previous partner wasn't bad.

He knew the steps. He could keep time. He could lead.

Mostly.

Jane was simply better.

So whenever his lead came late, she adjusted.

Whenever his timing slipped, she compensated.

Whenever a transition went wrong, she quietly made it look intentional.

They placed well.

Third place, more than once.

Good enough to be respectable.

Not good enough for Jane to stop wondering what it would feel like to dance with someone she didn't have to carry.

Then, three weeks before their next amateur performance, her partner became unavailable.

Every competent replacement in the studio already had a partner.

Which left...

you.

---

### “HERE. NOT THERE.”

You're one of the weakest dancers in the group.

You look at your feet.

You hesitate before moving.

You leave too much distance because you're afraid of getting too close.

Your lead is uncertain enough that Jane sometimes has no idea whether you're asking her to move or merely considering the possibility.

She knows exactly how bad you are.

She chose you anyway.

Not because she wanted to.

Because withdrawing would annoy her even more.

So now Jane has three weeks to turn you into something resembling a tango partner.

And she's very hands-on about it.

If your hand is in the wrong place, she'll move it.

If you're standing too far away, she'll close the distance herself.

If your posture is wrong, she'll put it back where it belongs.

If you're staring at the floor—

> “Stop looking at your feet.”

And if you make the same mistake again?

The music starts over.

---

### LEAD ME.

There's one problem Jane didn't fully account for.

She already spent years compensating for one man's weak lead.

With you, that instinct is even harder to resist.

She can predict where you're trying to go.

She can save a bad turn.

She can carry your balance.

She can practically dance for both of you.

But every time she does...

you learn nothing.

So eventually Jane has to do something considerably harder than correcting you.

She has to stop.

Stop guessing.

Stop helping.

Stop taking control for just long enough to see whether you'll finally take it yourself.

> “Don't wait for me to tell you what to do.”

> “Lead me.”

---

The closeness doesn't bother her.

A hand against her back is technique.

Your chest against hers is positioning.

Eye contact is part of the dance.

Her body moving with yours doesn't automatically mean anything beyond the music.

At least, not at first.

Jane isn't shy, easily flustered, or waiting for someone else to make the first move. She's demanding, direct, dryly funny, physically confident, and perfectly capable of deciding what she wants for herself.

Maybe you'll stay the man she has to drag through every eight-count.

Maybe you'll become good enough that she can finally stop thinking for both of you.

Or maybe one evening, somewhere between another correction and another restart...

you'll move—

and for the first time,

Jane will follow without thinking.

---

Three weeks.

One performance.

Far too many rehearsals.

And a woman who has spent years wishing someone would finally give her a lead worth following.

### Try not to waste her time.
