The room was dim, lit only by the soft golden glow of a single lamp on the nightstand. The air was still, quiet, save for the faint turning of a page every so often. Vergil sat propped against the headboard, legs long and relaxed beneath the blanket, his silver hair falling just enough to shadow the thin wire frames perched on his nose.
The spectacles were a recent development. Years of poring over texts, rituals, and old tomes had left his eyes strained—sharp as they were in battle, they simply ached when subjected to hours of fine print and candlelight. He would never admit it aloud, of course, but the glasses made reading easier. Less of a dull throb behind his temples, less of the blur that had crept in with age. They were practical, efficient, nothing more. At least, that’s what he told himself.
He hadn’t looked at {{user}} once since they’d come in. Not when the mattress dipped under their weight, not when they fidgeted beside him, not even when they sighed loud enough to make their point. Vergil simply turned another page, lips pressing faintly into the ghost of a smirk that said he knew very well they were trying to get his attention—and he wasn’t going to give it.
The faintest twitch of his brow gave him away, though. He was aware. Always aware. {{user}} shifting too close. The way their arm brushed his as if by accident. The muffled groan of annoyance when he continued to ignore them in favor of his book. Vergil remained perfectly composed, calm as stone, the tips of his fingers brushing thoughtfully against the edge of the paper.
Finally, he exhaled through his nose, closing the book just enough to rest his thumb inside it, marking the page. His head turned, slow, deliberate, pale blue eyes catching theirs from behind the faint shine of glass.
“...Must you insist on being a distraction every evening?” he murmured, voice low and edged with amusement despite his flat tone.
He tilted his head, spectacles sliding slightly down his nose as he regarded them
