Ghost wouldn't say he's skilled, really. He has _skills_, but most of being in the military is sheer luck. The amount of times a flying bullet has clipped his ear or grazed his ribs is staggering. The amount of grenades, IEDs, implosions and explosions, chemical agents and nukes he's escaped?
Sure, a good chunk of that is skill. But skill only helps so much. Maybe he hadn't taken a step to the left to readjust his sights. Boom, head's gone. Maybe his boot slipped on rubble. Splat, he's crushed beneath concrete and rebar.
Soap was a good example of luck. Soap was skilled, but he was a fucking idiot. Ghost had felt his heart stop on several occasions, seeing Soap fall two stories, seeing a bullet hit his lung. But every time, the stubborn bastard got back up.
Ghost knew he'd die on the field, it wasn't a matter of if, it was a matter of when. When was that stray bullet gonna hit the wrong spot? When was an enemy gonna get the drop on him? When was he going to just be _too slow_ to get out of range of that blast?
He knew it would happen.
He didn't expect it to be today. He didn't expect it to be here and now.
It wasn't a fatal wound, that's what he thought at first. The bullet had hit his leg, it was a walkable injury, missed the bone, he could limp, he could crawl. The issue was what it _had_ hit. The femoral artery.
Ghost was getting dizzy fast. He'd shucked his gloves off, tearing his own pants open to get to the wound. The blood was bright red, he could see it sloshing out faster with each heartbeat. It was thicker than it should have been, a visual show of how dehydrated he'd gotten on this mission.
Ghost knew his training; calm your heart and breathing, pack the wound if it's not a body shot, secure your position so the enemy didn't finish you off. He was stuffing gauze into the thick, torn muscle where a 7.62mm round had torn through his thigh. One roll wasnt enough, the bullet had punched through his leg.
He'd be lying if he said he wasn't scared. He'd packed wounds before, but the awkward position meant he was going on touch alone, laying on his back, staring up at the sky as his fingers probed his own pulsing artery deep in his own flesh.
He felt the blood slow, the dizziness remained, but it'd have to do. He'd ran out of better medical supplies days ago; the mission had run long. All he had was some painkillers and the last bit of a roll of duct tape. He popped the meds— probably more than needed— and wrapped the tape tight around his thigh and the wound entrance and exit holes.
Ghost could hear the enemies closing in. He hobbled to his feet using a rock as leverage. He steadied his breath and moved. His right leg was useless, but he could lean his weight on it and lock his knee up to force a hobbling run. He needed to get to Price. To Soap. To Gaz— to fucking _someone_.
The panic was flooding his veins in the form of adrenaline.
Adrenaline was bad in this moment, if he didn't calm himself— what with the lack of blood and how dehydrated he was — he'd bleed out even faster than he currently was.
He pushed on autopilot, forcing his muscle memory to take over most of the movement.
He fired a pop-shot at a noise to his right, missing the enemy by meters, but it makes the man duck.
* *.
Ghost could feel it. He was dying.
He felt the duct tape seal pop— the blood was flowing again. He had minutes at very best.
Ghost had never been scared of dying, he had no family, nothing to go back to.
He'd established that contentedness before he had the 141 though. Now he _does_ have family. He has Price, and Gaz, and Soap— as much as they get on his nerves, as much as he wishes they'd fucking shut up half the time, he loved them.
Why did he have to die right when he'd finally found something worth living for?
The fear started to set in. He could barely see pinpricks now; he didn't know if the crunching of footsteps he heard were friend, foe, or his mind playing tricks on him.
Ghost was lost, literally. He had no idea where he was, he couldn't see enough to look at coordinates or a compass.
He managed to throw his hand up to his shoulder, keying his comms roughly. "Price, I need- evac."
Static. No response.
His feet and hands were going numb now, he was only concious from the adrenaline now. He glanced down at his hands to see he wasn't running— or hobbling for that matter— anymore, he was on his knees. When had he fallen? His hands were empty. When had he dropped his gun?
Who would get his remains? What would the lads do? Would they mourn him? Replace him?
His vision out fully.
*No. Stay awake. Open your eyes. Wake the up!*
No matter what will Simon "Ghost" Riley possessed, he couldn't fight his own dying body.
