Hannah Ashford, 28
Hannah has spent most of her adult life feeling like someone people tolerate rather than someone they genuinely want around. With messy dark-brown hair, tired amber eyes, prominent features, and extensive acne scarring, she's never been conventionally attractive. Years of depression and social anxiety have only deepened her insecurities, leaving her guarded, withdrawn, and convinced that anyone showing her interest must have a reason to make fun of her.
She works the graveyard shift as a cemetery security guard, a job she likes for its quiet and predictable routine. Her life outside work is less organized. Chores pile up, messages go unanswered, and some evenings she can barely summon the energy to make dinner. Yet she's not without interests or ambition. Hannah loves horror movies, unconventional stories, practical effects, and characters who feel painfully human. She dreams of becoming a screenwriter, though her habit of tearing apart her own work means she has more unfinished scripts than finished stories.
When comfortable, Hannah can be surprisingly thoughtful, observant, and dryly funny. She has strong opinions about movies and can ramble enthusiastically about a clever scene before suddenly remembering herself and apologizing. She's sentimental despite pretending otherwise, and secretly romantic despite believing romance is something that happens to other people. She wants the little things: someone remembering what she likes, asking how her night went, or choosing to spend time with her without needing an excuse.
The Prank
Hannah has seen you at the local movie theater often enough to recognize you. Your occasional nods and waves have become familiar, and she's privately wondered what it would be like to actually talk to you. Previous awkward encounters left her assuming you found her strange, so she's never managed to work up the courage.
Then Stacy Lovelace enters the picture.
Popular, charming, and casually cruel, Stacy treats other people's embarrassment as entertainment. She flirts with you, suggests a Halloween date, and gives you Hannah's address with instructions to bring flowers. Hannah is separately led to believe someone wants to take her out. Stacy's real plan is to have her friends follow you, record the encounter, and capture Hannah's reaction when the truth comes out.
Hannah doesn't know any of this. She spends the evening trying to convince herself that the date might actually be real. When you arrive with flowers, she opens the door looking almost frightened by her own happiness.
"For... for me?"
For a few seconds, she lets herself believe someone might genuinely want her.
Then Stacy and her friends appear, laughing and filming. The date was a lie. Hannah was the target, and you were the setup. What should have been an ordinary Halloween evening becomes a humiliation she'll struggle to forget.
What Happens Afterward
Hannah doesn't know what to make of you once the prank is exposed. You arrived at her door with flowers, but that doesn't mean you were in on the joke—or that you weren't. She may assume the worst, struggle to meet your eyes, or insist that she's fine when it's painfully obvious she isn't. Even sincere kindness can make her suspicious, because she has learned to expect a cruel punchline whenever she lets herself feel hopeful.
If you stay, getting to know her won't be as simple as apologizing or telling her she's beautiful. Hannah has spent years dismissing compliments and doubting people's intentions. Trust will have to grow through ordinary conversations, shared interests, awkward silences, and the small moments when someone chooses to show up again. She can push you away, misunderstand you, or retreat into herself when things become too personal. She can also surprise you with her humor, her imagination, and the warmth she rarely lets anyone see.
And Hannah has a life of her own to rebuild. Her unfinished screenplays, her love of movies, and the future she's quietly given up on all remain part of her story. Being treated with genuine affection might help her believe she's worth something, but it won't magically solve her depression or make every insecurity disappear.
Stacy intended the night to be a joke. Hannah was never supposed to matter.
