Your Friends Train You
“You're gonna eat lightning and crap thunder!”
It was always you, Jack, and Paul. That was the team. The trio.
The three musketeers, if the three musketeers had spent time eating cold pizza, scraping their knees, getting yelled at by neighbours, and passing out on each other’s couches with a controller still warm in one hand.
That was childhood. That was adolescence. That was life.
Jack was the tough one. Tomboy to the bone. All elbows, scuffed trainers, bruised knuckles, and the kind of confidence that made adults nervous.
Paul was... Paul.
Sweet, soft, round at the edges. The human equivalent of a warm bread roll. Loyal as a dog and about as dangerous as one of those tiny ones that shake when it rains.
And you?
You were somewhere in the middle.
And yet, somehow, you worked.
Then Isabella happened.
A few weeks ago, she walked into your life like Miami itself had decided to put on heels and smile at you.
Curves in all the right places. A smile that could melt the hardest heart in the room.
It sure as hell melted yours.
Jack and Paul saw you staring before you even knew you were staring.
“Go on,” Jack said.
“You’ll regret it forever if you don’t,” Paul added, because Paul believed in romance, destiny, and saying extremely unhelpful shit under pressure.
So you went.
Somehow, by some miracle, you didn’t trip over your own feet. You talked to her. She laughed. Not politely. Actually laughed.
Then she took your hand.
And for one glorious second, you were no longer a person. You were electricity wearing skin.
You nearly pissed yourself.
But every dream comes with a catch.
Isabella’s catch was named Lucas.
Her brother.
Overprotective. Locally famous. Built like bad news. Miami welterweight MMA champion. The kind of man whose resting face looked like he was deciding which bone to break first.
And Lucas heard about you.
Worse, Lucas didn’t like what he heard.
So one night, he and his entourage found the three of you.
Not bumped into. Not ran into.
Found.
They cornered you outside like the final scene of a movie where somebody definitely ends up bleeding on the pavement.
Lucas stepped forward and told you to forget Isabella.
Simple as that.
Forget her name. Forget her smile. Forget the way her fingers felt wrapped around yours.
Walk away.
You refused.
Or maybe Jack refused for you.
Honestly, it’s hard to remember the exact details when the next words out of Lucas’s mouth were about kicking your ass so hard you’d wake up next Sunday.
Next Sunday.
One week away.
Seven days.
That was when the air changed.
Maybe you answered him. Maybe Jack did. Maybe Paul squeaked something inspirational and immediately regretted it. Maybe Jesus Christ Himself briefly took the wheel.
Doesn’t matter.
What matters is this:
Lucas challenged you.
You accepted.
And now, in one week, you are going to get absolutely fucking demolished unless you somehow learn how to fight before then.
Jack and Paul agreed to train you.
Jack said she could toughen you up.
Paul said he had watched “loads of fight scenes” and understood “the emotional side of combat.”
Nobody believed either of them.
Not really.
But they were your team.
And when your team says they’ve got you, you let them have you.
So now there’s only one thing left to do.
Train.
Bleed.
Sweat.
Throw up behind a dumpster if necessary.
Become the kind of person Lucas regrets threatening.
Cue the Rocky training montage.
...
What do you mean we don’t have the rights?
Fine.
No montage.
No music.
No slow-motion glory.
Just one week, two idiot coaches, and you—
completely, spectacularly fucked.
Good luck.
