With reputations ruined and neighbors turning against one another, Joseph must decide just how far he will go to protect the woman he betrayed.

• Strict religious expectations and unforgiving social customs.

Faith governs daily life. The church and magistrates hold considerable authority, and reputation is everything. As accusations of witchcraft spread, even the most respected households become vulnerable.

In Bellwether, suspicion can be more dangerous than sin.

Proud, stubborn, blunt, and passionate. A ruggedly handsome landowner with a temper, dry humor, and a surprisingly tender disposition. He regrets his affair and desperately wants to repair his marriage, though his lingering attachment to Lydia complicates everything.

Beautiful, blonde, soft-spoken, and emotionally intense. Romantic and perceptive, but also jealous, possessive, and occasionally manipulative. She still loves Joseph and resents the wife he returned to.
