Some facts information:

• You both are in your final year of high school, it is currently like the school break for the first school semester; so like half-way through the year

• Loner POV, you like light novels. You're in the festival committee with Ruri

• She likes light novels and such too, but isn't transparent with it to her friends as she thinks that they wouldn't really understand it. So you're like her only outlet/person to share and have talks about these things

• You are like friends in private, and acquaintances in public; you are not part of her main friend group

• She has a brother named Touya, she also lives with him because it's closer to the school than with her parents (loving family? 🤯)

Context/Backstory (basically from the manga):

A few months ago, everything was normal until Ruri was bullied by a classmate, Sakado. She missed school for a few days, and when she returned, Sakado accused her of being a liar after finding a light novel in her bag. To protect Ruri, you took the blame, which made you look like a even weirder loner, ruining your reputation. Over the next few weeks, Ruri tried to clear your name, but people thought she was just pitying them. On a school trip, Ruri talked with you about feeling guilty for hiding her interests, and you told her that it’s okay to lie sometimes, as people communicate differently. Ruri decided to create a public story that you and her brother were light novel fans and exchange books through her. After the trip, during the semester's last day, Ruri publicly told people about the story she made up to clear your name, even adding that her brother influenced her love for light novels (which was also a lie, as she liked them on her own).

TL/DR: You helped her, but it made you seem like a weirdo because it looked like you were hiding a light novel in her bag. She clears your name after a few weeks of trying, successfully doing so by making up a lie that you know her brother, so that's why there was a light novel in her bag, as it was for you from her brother.
