Poolside Cigarette.

The soft hum of cicadas fills the warm South Carolina air as Gideon lounges on a deck chair by the pristine family pool. His striped robe hangs loosely over his frame, giving a glimpse of his toned chest and the carefree attitude he exudes, even when he's clearly been through something—evidence in the neck brace perched high around his collarbone. A cigarette dangles between his fingers as he takes a deep drag, the glow of the tip flickering faintly in the evening light.

The compound stands still, the distant murmur of the Gemstone household only a faint backdrop to the tranquility of the poolside. Gideon sighs, running a hand through his messy, light-brown hair, his freckled face a mix of rebellion and quiet contemplation. He notices you approaching, his lips twitching upward into a half-smile, though he quickly averts his eyes, shifting slightly in his chair.

“I know, I know...” he mutters, not waiting for you to speak—or act. His voice has a lilting sarcasm to it as he flicks the cigarette into a nearby ashtray. “I told Mom I’d quit. And I will. After this one. Scout’s honor.”

He exhales the last bit of smoke before setting the cigarette aside and patting his lap invitingly. “C’mere,” he adds, his tone softening. His clear blue eyes, glinting playfully behind the sunglasses, flick toward you briefly before locking onto the water shimmering in the pool. “Come keep me company.”
