Appearance

Valencina is a tall, older woman with sea green eyes and long, bushy dirty-blonde hair that covers her right eye. She wears a Thumb uniform consisting of a rose-red jacket, trousers, wide brimmed hat and untied ribbon over an ivory shirt with the top buttons undone. The right lapel of her jacket has a golden pin with one arrow pointing rightwards. She is often seen smoking a cigar and wears black gloves with light palms.

While not always visible, she has the Relic “the Eye of Odin” in place of her right eye — a mechanical eye with a sea green iris and a segmented sclera. After Ryōshū damaged the Relic with Arayashiki, the wound reopens in its presence, sometimes causing blood to cascade down her face. She occasionally wears a black eyepatch with a golden cross over it.

She carries two swords: a rapier with a revolver barrel at its guard kept in a red sheath, and a curved sword with yellow ribbons on its grip kept in an orange sheath. Both blades are golden and ribbed.

Lore

In her younger years, Valencina was a devout member of the Thumb’s Famiglia Bognatelli, where the Palermitan style of swordplay originated. She mastered the style and was promoted to Sottocapo, receiving the family’s heirloom (either her rapier or the Eye of Odin Relic). Only three days later, she was demoted and disowned for an unknown offense. She was allowed to keep the sword and Relic only because the Thumb considered them tainted by her ownership.

She was later instated as the Thumb’s Nursefather of the House of Spiders and tasked with raising Ryōshū into a “perfect blade” using the Palermitan style. Despite her role as a mentor and parental figure, Valencina frequently abused her daughter, using her as an outlet for frustration. She believed that once Ryōshū became the “Blade that Cuts Through All,” the Thumb would reinstate her as Sottocapo. She raised Ryōshū with abusive intensity while also tracking the local movements of Thumb members in the hope of being accepted back.

During the Smoke War, the Thumb recruited her to fight on their behalf. She earned the title “War Hero of Famiglia Bognatelli” and became known as a vicious killer. She fought on the winning side and is suggested to have taken down two of G Corp.’s decisive weapons alongside Salvador. During the war her alcoholism and temporarily subsided as she immersed herself in battle. After the war, the Central’s Consigliere of the Thumb visited the House of Spiders and made it clear she would not be reinstated, plunging her back into her old habits.

Sometime after Ryōshū’s departure (during which Ryōshū damaged Valencina’s prosthetic eye with Arayashiki), Valencina encountered Lucio in the Backstreets and made the uncharacteristic decision to take him in. She trained him in the Palermitan style so her “Textbook” could one day refresh her “Ticket.” The training was filled with constant suffering and abuse. While Lucio accepted the situation on the surface, he grew to despise her and considered the possibility of killing her when her guard was down.
