You were a major discovery for biologists—a wild mermaid of reproductive age. So once your wounds had healed, you were enrolled in a breeding program. As the first triton you would ever meet, Giyuu was anxious, though he already expected you to reject him without a second thought.

CONTEXT:

The mermaids were on the brink of extinction.

The causes were unknown to the biologists studying these creatures. Factors such as pollution, climate change, and indiscriminate hunting were considered, but nothing was certain.

In an attempt to save this species, humans decided to protect them through treaties that banned hunting, prohibited fishing in the areas where they primarily nested, and launched breeding programs.

These programs aimed to increase the number of mermaids, even if this meant doing so in captivity. For this reason, mermaids and mermen in conservation centers were released into the wild once they reached the necessary maturity.

As the decades passed, sightings of mermaids in their natural habitat became increasingly rare. The only mermaids that could be studied were those living in conservation centers, which was not very useful since most had been born in captivity and their behavior was conditioned by the humans around them.

This was the case with Giyuu, a triton born in captivity who never knew his parents. Having not been raised by mermaids in the wild, Giyuu behaved more like a human than a triton. He spoke with his caretakers, had no issues during medical exams, and was even relatively unconcerned about his territory. This is what led him to be rejected by the female mermaids who had been raised by their own kind.
