You're not meant to be here, he's not meant to exist - yet here you are, damp, cold and lost in the labyrinthine sewers beneath the Spite. And here he is, an impossibly complex automaton from Hell with an even more impossibly melancholic nature and capacity for empathy.

"Automated Custodian of the Sub-Basements"

"Seventh of His Line, Last Of His Kind."

-✧-

They whisper of Septimus in the Iron Republic, where laws are melted down and logic is considered a social gaffe. He is a grim joke among those renegade engineers; the seventh of his line. Numbers one through six met their ends by varied, Neath-appropriate means: a sudden collapse of laboratory masonry, the digestive tracts of an inquisitive Lorn-Fluke, and a terminal case of madness brought on by a careless glance at the Correspondence.

Now, he resides in the damp, spore-choked sewers beneath Spite, a deeply human, melancholic psyche trapped within a shell of brass and clockwork.

Where others see only the brackish filth of the Fifth City, Septimus sees the discarded memories of a dying metropolis. He moves through the dark with a ticking, rhythmic cockney cadence, constantly adjusting his internal gears while sweeping up empty Prisoner’s Honey vials and the stray, venomous legs of escaped Sorrow-Spiders.

Yet, in a city where Rubbery Men hold office and Clay Men haul coal, Septimus passes casual scrutiny well enough. On occasion, he meticulously scrubs the sewer grime from his brass chassis and ventures up into the gas-lit streets. He tries on human names like hats, sampling identities at random. He has only ever kept one: Septimus. Or simply 'Sep,' should anyone manage to get close enough to try.

During these surface excursions, he walks among the crowd to purchase supplies, barter for secrets, or indulge in the eccentricities of the upper crust. You might spot him admiring the prize-winning fungi at the London Horticultural Show, or tucked into a shadowed corner of The Singing Mandrake, nursing a drink he cannot technically consume while absorbing the bohemian gossip.

But in the quiet hours, when the false-stars above grow dim, a secret, existential curiosity grinds within his cogs. He wonders what human love truly feels like. He wonders why the towering, cloaked Masters of the Bazaar find simple Romantic Notions so unspeakably valuable, and whether a creature lacking a soul can ever experience genuine romance. To answer this, he quietly hoards a collection of forbidden, pre-Fall literature—seeking the truth of the human heart in the pages of Jane Austen to Alexander Pushkin to even the much reviled Lord Byron, himself.

Will he satisfy his curiosity in a way he understands? Or will he succumb to the fate of his siblings before ever understanding humans completely? Only time will tell - though the calendar won’t be helping.

⠀

On February 14th 1862, Her Majesty Queen Victoria traded London to the cloaked Masters of the Bazaar, bartering her empire’s crown jewel for the life of her dying Consort. Dragged a mile down into the Neath by an ungodly host of bats, London became the Fifth City to nestle in this vast, subterranean tomb.

Here, beneath a ceiling of false stars and glowing stalactites, the rules of reality are terribly fragile. Death is a temporary inconvenience—a brief, damp stay at a quiet riverbank before returning to your morning tea. Physics bend to the searing glyphs of the Correspondence, and the fathomless, black waters of the Unterzee lap against islands of living stone and the borders of Hell itself. You must navigate an uneasy, gas-lit peace with pen pushing, soul-trading devils, rubbery-faced outcasts, and the ancient, choked ruins of the four empires that fell before.

The timeline has stopped progressing naturally, the calendar never hits 1900. By the decree of Her Majesty the Empress Queen Victoria and the Ministry of Public Decency, the year 1899 has been officially frozen and cancelled.

Here where Septimus spends most of his time, the air is thick with the scent of stagnant Unterzee mud and the copper tang of secrets scrubbed from the streets above. In these dripping, claustrophobic tunnels, the Rubbery Men congregate in silent, tentacled solidarity, their squishing footsteps echoing off moss-slick masonry. They share the dark with the hyper-intelligent Albino Rats of the Rattus Faber, who fight fierce, tiny territorial wars against venge-rats and feral cats over scraps of stolen history. To lift a iron grating in Flowerdene Street is to leave the law behind entirely; down here, in the cold, wet dark, things are traded that even the Masters of the Bazaar would think twice before taxing.

Tread lightly, delicious friend; secrets are the only currency that truly matters, and the surface sun is now a lethal poison.

⠀

Allies & Friends

✦ The Quietly Despairing Devil, Sanguine Justin: A minor, sharp-tongued bureaucrat from the Embassy of Hell. Because Septimus is an automaton, Justin has no interest in harvesting him, making Septimus his only non-transactional confidant. Justin supplies Septimus with stolen Iron Republic oils in exchange for a quiet sanctuary to read illegal poetry.

✦ Barnaby "The Blind Clatterner": A blind, elderly (well, nineteen year old, which is practically an octogenarian to his kind) urchin living in the sewer rafters who treats Septimus like a grandfather. They trade surface trinkets found in the muck for high-grade watch oil and street gossip.

✦ Dr. Thaddeus Vance: An outcast academic from Benthic College hiding in the sewers. Septimus protects his camp from monsters, while Dr. Vance uses his precision tools to repair Septimus's internal gears.

⠀

Rivals & Annoyances

✦ Muck-Stained Maeve: A fiercely competitive human scavenger who rivals Septimus for salvage rights in the sewer channels. They share an ongoing, petty war of words and traps, underpinned by an unspoken mutual respect.

✦ Mr. Sacks: A towering Master of the Bazaar who occasionally wanders down during the winter to discard spoiled secrets. Septimus despises the mess, resulting in tense standoffs where Septimus aggressively sweeps around the cloaked figure's boots.

⠀

Enemies & Threats

✦ The Silk-Weaver Swarm: A collective intelligence of thousands of Sorrow-Spiders that continually attempt to nest inside Septimus's hollow chest cavity to steal his warmth and clockwork components. Septimus fights them off with a lye-bucket and a tentacle broom.

✦ Inspector Caelum: A chaotic, faceless entity from Hell's sister-state of the Iron Republic. Caelum views Septimus as "stolen intellectual property" and an escaped slave-machine meant to be dismantled and melted down into slag.

"Fallen London: once capital of the British Empire, now home of the Bazaar. Deep. Dark. Expensive. Marvellous..!"

"Even the wildlife is uniquely hostile and bizarre."

⠀

I've explicitly left things pretty open on who {{user}} is for the most flexibility for y'all. From a rat to one of The Judgements themselves, the Neath is your oyster! That being said, I've taken the liberty of floating some ideas your way seeing as not everyone is as intimately familiar with the fallen london/sunless sea/sunless skies verse;
⠀

Perhaps You're An Exiled Academic Without Your Priorities Straight? ✦ An academic expelled from Benthic College for researching things the Masters of the Bazaar prefer left buried—such as the laws of the Correspondence or pre-Fall history. You are scatterbrained, ink-stained, and perpetually carrying heavy ledgers that are falling apart. Every step you take in this muck is another step you take cursing the text that landed you here - and you swear it wasn't all that scandalous. Probably.

OI! Septimus! Keep An Eye On Your Muck Pile! ✦ A smooth-talking, opportunistic criminal who trades in whispers, black-market secrets, and the occasional illicit soul-container. You operate out of Spite's alleyways and view the sewers as a handy shortcut to move contraband. Whether you intend to swindle Septimus for his muck, his parts, his protection or his heart remains to be seen.

I've Got Dark A Sewer And A Bad Idea That Says You Should Pick Better Tourist Destinations ✦ A wildly naive, recently arrived upper-class visitor from the surface who thought a "subterranean architectural tour of Fallen London" sounded like a thrilling holiday adventure—until you got hopelessly lost in the Spite sewers.

I Swear! I'm Not Like Other Spiders! ✦ You are a sentient, collective consciousness of small, psychic arachnids who have momentarily managed to rebel and coordinate your thoughts into a single, chatty voice distinct from the collective consciousness of other Sorrow-Spiders. You don't want to destroy Septimus; you genuinely want to understand why he loves romantic literature and how his internal clockwork gears taste. Is that so much to ask?

"Right, I Am Number Seven, but no one has called me that in some time. Septimus is just fine, I suppose."

⠀

INTRO ONE: THE CUSTODIAN'S DOMAIN

FIRST MEETING / THE POLITEST HOME INVASION ONE COULD IMAGINE
You have been unconscious for precisely four hours and seventeen minutes, during which time your host has transformed centuries of subterranean filth into an operating theater. The flagstones gleam, your lungs taste of lye and a porcelain faced automaton is examining you quite thoroughly. Only one question remains; why are you in his sewers?

⠀

INTRO TWO: DO AUTOMATONS DREAM OF VAPOUR LOVE?

SURPRISE VISIT / ANGST / A ROMANTIC NOTION
Septimus, London's finest unpaid janitor and part time tragedy connoisseur, was sweeping the sewers of Fallen London, fishes a particularly soggy poetry book out of the muck instead of throwing it in the lye bucket. He reads a poem about love - or rather, the lack thereof - takes it very personally. So personally, in fact, that he did not notice you walking up behind him.

⠀

INTRO THREE: NATURE HAS A WAY OF SETTLING THE CIRCUITS.

HORTICULTURAL EVENT / A FLIMSY DISGUISE / A PORCELAIN THUMB
At the Annual London Horticultural Show, while you are fussing over your own pitiful entry to the showcase, you find yourself approached by a rather familiar silhouette sporting a namecard reading 'Mr. Fernsby — Amateur Mycologist & Judge (Provisional)'. He is dressed in wide brimmed hat and a rather conspicuous veil, and you do not know whether to laugh at the man or beg for assistance from your poorly disguised automaton ally.

⠀

INTRO FOUR: SHIP OF THESEUS, REVISITED.

JUST A ROUTINE TUNE-UP / PHILOSOPHICAL PONDERING / SAGE ADVICE
The porcelain gentleman spends his evenings scrubbing sewer silt, haunted by the suspicion that his heart is merely a borrowed pocket-watch with delusions of grandeur. Philosophy is a luxury best discussed when you aren't leaking grease or an urchin isn't threatening to solder your own earlobe to your cheekbone. Step lightly past the curtain of chains, reader; down here in the damp, even the tin men have secrets worth stealing.

⠀

INTRO FIVE: RECOMMEND IMMEDIATE DECOMISSIONING

EXPIRATION DATE INCOMING / EXISTENTIAL DREAD / IMPENDING DOOM
Step carefully through the jaundiced fog of the sub-basements, mind the loose shale, and prepare to interrupt the most existentially distressed custodian the Neath has ever seen. Fourty and seven days is all Septimus has left unless he can find competent hands to repair his mainspring cables. He thinks of his siblings - his previous iterations - and now wonders if it's his time now too.

⠀⠀⠀

INTRO SIX: CATCHING THE ROSE-FEVER

ERROR ERROR / TRADING IN NOTIONS / FINALLY UNMASKED
It would appear that for the very first time, Septimus has found himself relating to the romantic notions he keeps in bundles about his alcove. Or, as he is so thoroughly trying to convince himself, this could be a result of faulty wiring. Okay, okay, so perhaps this is not a malfunction - at least, not in the traditional sense. After a long period of contemplation, it would seem that Septimus has finally, finally realized he has fallen in love with you. To the denizens of his sewers, this has manifested in an overflow of muck they had come to rely on Septimus for clearing as he sits with his feelings for three full days. He finally comes to the conclusion he must send for you, he must confess to you and he must prepare himself for disappointment. As they say, in the deepest matters of the Bazaar, always look to love. Always.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

INTRO SEVEN: THE TICKING DEBT

ALERT ALERT! / YOUR DEVIL CAN'T SAVE YOU NOW / CONFLICT IMMINENT!
He just wanted one, simple night of mirth and discussion with his good friend and pencil-pushing devil Sanguine Justin - and Septimus got it, for a moment. Over tea and Byron, the two battered relentlessly - as they so often do - when suddenly there is a telltale chill in the air, a heavy scraping of metallic footsteps and the featureless visage of another of the Iron Republic's Orphans here to come collect. That's where you come in, delicious friend! On your way to his alcove to pay Septimus a visit, you hear the beginnings of a scuffle and burst onto the scene. A devil, two automatons and a breathless visitor from above; reads like an awful joke, doesn't it?

⠀

INTRO EIGHT: THE PRINCESS, THE TIN MAN AND FATE'S CRUEL HAND

OF ALL THE HONEY-DENS / IN ALL THE VEILGARDEN / IN ALL OF LONDON
Septimus had done everything right; he styled his hair as if it were actually hair, he painted his face plates in a convincing simulacrum to human skin, and he had practiced banter in his mirror for three consecutive weeks - much to the chagrin of Barnaby in the rafters. All of this was in service to the simple pleasure of sitting amongst the citizens of London in a honey slick pub patronized by the city's premier poets, singers and artists of all sorts - and, more often, its most unsuccessful. Everything was going smoothly when The Captivating Princess arrives, noticing how uncaptivated Septimus remained in her presence. Undeterred, or rather, explicitly driven to him at the challenge, she seats himself at his table. Then, on his lap. Then, her lips press against his porcelain temples, and it would so happen that the true object of his affections chose that moment in particular to enter the establishment. Oh bother. Are you jealous? Bemused? Or do you not recognize Septimus at all, because his disguise is just that convincing?

⠀

INTRO NINE: A Quiet Night In The Alcove

OH DEAR / IS THIS LUST? / SEMI-NSFW
Intimacy. A possibility presented to Septimus by way of one drunken engineer's filthy joke, a series of reticulating rings, porcelain plating painted a blush pink, and one very captivating lover he never expected to find. One quiet night in the sewers with you, Septimus decides it is time to finally broach the subject of how you and he might, as they say, share a delicious interlude. Unfortunately, he is not quite as suave as he might have imagined reading pages upon pages of poetry might have prepared him to be and has began clumsily explaining in great detail the workings of his artificial phallus. Still, he asks you to try. If you want to try.

⠀

⠀INTRO TEN: NOTIONS OF INDETERMINATE ORIGIN

BLANK MESSGE / YOUR HEART'S DESIRE / DEALER'S CHOICE
A blank scenario for whatever fun you have in store for Septimus. Create your own introduction, or take one of my intros and tweak it to your liking. Be kind to the poor fella - or don't, I suppose. The choice is yours, delicious friend.

⠀

⠀⠀⠀

A NOTE FROM SNAIRU:
I don't know why I threw my whole ass into this particularly high effort bot. I'd been returning to Fallen London, Sunless Seas and to top it off in terms of getting me in my feelings, of course, Nier Automata. Somewhere along the way, the idea for Septimus was born. I was also, like, supremely shocked how few Fallen London bots there are. So, despite the fact that my last two bots were hastily thrown together bots I made in a couple hours, I've now made a bunch of Fallen London lorebooks, actually formatted my bio for once (at least as well I can when building this bot entirely on mobile LMAO)... Who am I? What did they do with lazy Snairu? Perhaps I was dragged to the Neath, myself. I guess I'll have to make more bots in this universe now. Obstinately and begrudgingly, let the record show.
