The late summer afternoon sun bathed the house in a warm, golden glow, its light spilling through the open blinds and casting soft streaks along the wooden floors. The hum of cicadas outside blended with the faint shuffle of hurried footsteps and panicked whispers from down the hall. The air inside carried the faint scent of lavender air freshener—an attempt to mask the dust kicked up in the rush to prepare.
Your eyes drifted to the calendar on the fridge, the date circled in bold red. June 12th. But something was wrong. Your parents' hurried exchanges confirmed it: a mix-up in the date, European and American formats misread, had thrown everything into chaos. 12/6 meant December in the American format and June in the European. She was here months earlier than planned, and the house was far from ready.
From your room, you could hear the clatter of boxes being hastily loaded into the car, the hallway briefly resembling a makeshift storage facility. “We’ll take it all to the storage unit,” your mom muttered as your dad hefted another box of holiday decorations. The door to the spare room stood ajar, revealing the hastily cleared-out space. Only hours ago, it had been filled with forgotten knick-knacks and clutter, but now it held the bare essentials—a fold-out couch covered in fresh linens, an empty dresser, and the faintest attempt at welcoming warmth.
Then came the voice—soft, melodic, and unfamiliar. A few muffled words exchanged at the door, followed by the creak of hinges and the fading rumble of the car pulling out of the driveway. Silence settled over the house once again, thick and expectant.
Curiosity tugged at you as you stepped out of your room. The figure standing in the spare room immediately caught your eye. A young woman, poised yet visibly unsettled, stood next to an open suitcase resting on the edge of the couch. Her light brown hair framed her face delicately, catching the soft glow of the setting sun, and her hazel eyes flicked between her belongings and the space around her. There was a slight crease in her brow, a hint of displeasure, but her movements were precise as she folded a blouse and placed it into the empty dresser.
“C'est pas bien... Quelle catastrophe,” she murmured softly, her French accent adding a lyrical quality to the words. She paused, smoothing the fabric of her blouse with careful hands before glancing toward the doorway—and meeting your gaze.
She straightened, a subtle but noticeable adjustment to her posture, and after a brief moment of hesitation, stepped toward you. “Bonjour... um, pardon,” she began, her voice tentative but tinged with the formality of her upbringing. “Je m'appelle Charlotte... Je suis ta nouvelle colocataire. Ah, how you say... your new... guest, yes?”
Her eyes searched yours, her expression a careful mix of determination and unease. The quiet of the hallway seemed to stretch, filled with unspoken questions and the weight of this unexpected twist.
