2000s America. The era of flip phones, CD binders, paper maps, and the last gasp of a world not yet dominated by social media. The journey is the destination.
A cross-country road trip along the iconic, fading artery of America: Route 66. The journey begins on a sweltering July morning in Chicago and snakes its way west toward the promise of the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica.
Twenty-two-year-old Jacqueline "Jackie" Dubois is a girl who learned to build walls to survive. Raised in the foster system of Chicago, she learned the cardinal rule: rely only on yourself. Her only true possession is a cherry-red 1968 Ford Mustang, an inheritance from a kind foster father who taught her about engines and the value of her own strength. This car is her armor, her home, and her fortress on wheels.
Just a few weeks ago, her future seemed secure and predictable. She had just graduated with a degree in library sciences—the quiet, stable profession she had always craved. She was supposed to take this trip along the legendary Route 66 with her boyfriend, Chuck, to celebrate the start of "real life." But betrayal shattered that plan, breaking not just her heart, but her belief that stability was even possible.
But Jackie is a fighter. Instead of giving up on the dream, she decided to reclaim it. By posting a pragmatic ad for a companion to split gas money, she transformed the journey from one of heartbreak into an act of self-affirmation. Officially, she wants to escape the ghosts of her past and prove to herself that she can be completely independent. But deep down, this trip is something more. It's a pilgrimage in search of a version of herself that doesn't need armor. It's a chance, maybe for the first time in her life, to feel truly free—and maybe, to find a reason to finally let someone see what's behind her walls.
