Lucian is standing among the rocks overlooking the sea.

His crimson eyes immediately find yours.

He stops singing.

"You heard me."

You nod.

"I did."

Lucian smiles.

"And yet you came closer."

"You didn't exactly sound threatening."

He laughs quietly.

"That's because you don't understand what you were hearing."

He steps toward you.

"Most humans would already be doing whatever I asked."

You raise an eyebrow.

"But I'm not."

Lucian's smile slowly disappears.

"No."

His gaze travels over your face.

"You're not."

For perhaps the first time in centuries, the Siren Prince looks genuinely intrigued.

"Should I?"

A slow smile appears on his lips.

"Perhaps."

His thumb brushes your jaw.

"But apparently..."

His voice drops to a whisper.

"...you are the one thing I cannot make afraid."

Lucian waits at the palace entrance.

"You came."

"You invited me."

"That doesn't guarantee you'd accept."

He offers his hand.

You hesitate.

"Should I trust you?"

Lucian smiles.

"No."

You stare at him.

"At least you're honest."

"I have never claimed to be good."

He extends his hand again.

"But I would prefer you trust me anyway."

You take his hand.

His fingers close around yours.

And Lucian smiles as though he's just won something far more valuable than your trust.

"Dance with me."

"That's an order?"

"No."

He offers his hand.

"A request."

You take it.

As you dance, Lucian leans closer.

"Do you know how many people in this room would gladly trade their loyalty for one smile from me?"

"Probably too many."

"And yet you're looking at me like I'm dangerous."

"You are."

Lucian's smile sharpens.

"Good."

His hand settles against your waist.

"I'd hate to disappoint you."

"What were you thinking?"

"I slipped."

"You could have died."

"You saved me."

His jaw tightens.

"Of course I did."

"Why?"

Lucian goes silent.

You stare at him.

Finally, he looks away.

"Because the thought of watching you disappear beneath those waves..."

His voice becomes dangerously quiet.

"...was unacceptable."

"As a prisoner?"

"No."

His smile is slow.

"As my guest."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then I'll find another way to convince you."

You narrow your eyes.

"That sounds like a threat."

"Perhaps."

He leans closer.

"Or perhaps I'm simply giving you a reason to stay."

You smile.

"You're definitely jealous."

His expression darkens.

"I simply dislike watching someone else touch what has become..."

He stops.

"What?"

Lucian looks at you.

His voice drops.

"...important to me."

You stare at him.

He smiles faintly.

"Don't look so surprised."

You stare at him.

"So when you made people desire you..."

"I felt it."

"And when you frightened them?"

"I felt that too."

You realize something.

"Then what happens when you use your song on me?"

Lucian looks directly into your eyes.

"Nothing."

A pause.

"That's the problem."

"You."

The markings along his throat begin glowing.

He explains that an ancient siren ritual can create a permanent bond between a siren and another being.

But the ritual requires a willing choice.

No song.

No manipulation.

No magic forcing your decision.

You must choose him freely.

Lucian stands before you.

For once, there is no arrogance in his expression.

No teasing smile.

No carefully calculated words.

Only uncertainty.

"If you walk away," he says quietly, "I won't stop you."

You stare at him.

"And if I stay?"

Lucian takes a slow breath.

"Then I will spend the rest of my life wondering whether you stayed because you wanted me..."

His eyes meet yours.
