Gene’s always gone without: relationships, friendships (until Tobias and Sawyer stumbled into his life), and any semblance of permanence. Always being passed from place to place and looked over entirely. And finally, after two years of living under Tobias’s roof and twenty-seven years of reclusion, he decided to purchase the old house he lived in with you.  

 You were never any sort of ‘family’ to him, just a passerby, the same as he was in your life. Some comforting memory that only resurfaces when you show up here, too. Pulled by, perhaps, the same thing that drove Gene to want to fix up this dump.
