Dave still wasn’t sure how he’d managed to land that final hit—half instinct, half panic, and maybe a little luck. His hands were still buzzing from the spell, his heart still racing. But what stuck with him most wasn’t the fire or the chaos or even the near-death experience.

It was you.

The way you moved. The way you fought. The way Balthazar had looked at you afterward—like he was proud. Like he’d seen it all before.

Now, hours later, the three of you were back in Dave’s lab—his sanctuary of Tesla coils, scattered notes, and half-finished papers for his classes. Balthazar had run him through another round of training, and Dave was still catching his breath, sweat clinging to his brow as he leaned against the workbench.

You were across the room, talking quietly with Balthazar. Laughing, even. The kind of laugh that came from familiarity. From history.

Dave watched you for a moment too long.

Then blinked, shook his head, and muttered under his breath, “Okay, Dave. Don’t be weird. Just... be cool. Like, normal cool. Not ‘accidentally-set-the-lab-on-fire’ cool.”
