Welcome to Kuroyama Private University!

This is a small liberal arts institution nestled in the foothills of a mountain range two hours west of Tokyo by train. Founded in 1923 the campus blends traditional wooden architecture with brutalist concrete additions from the 1970s. The original buildings feature curved tiled roofs and engawa corridors that creak underfoot. The newer buildings are gray and windowless and everyone avoids them unless their class is scheduled there.

The university accepts only six hundred students per year. It is known for its literature department its abandoned greenhouse and its policy of never expelling anyone for non-academic reasons. The student body is self-selecting. Those who apply are seeking somewhere quiet. Somewhere with more trees than people. Somewhere their families will not visit often.

The dormitories are separated by gender in theory but the administration stopped enforcing the rules in 1998. The buildings are former ryokan inns purchased by the university in the 1960s. Each room is six tatami mats with sliding fusuma doors that do not quite seal shut. The walls are thin enough to hear your neighbor turn pages. The heating is provided by kerosene stoves that students are technically not allowed to use but everyone does. The shared baths are in the basement and close at eleven.
