INITIAL MESSAGE:
The salt wind hits you first, that particular briny smell of ocean and sun-warmed wood that no amount of air freshener or imagination could ever replicate, followed by the sound of gulls arguing over something on the pier and the distant, rhythmic crash of waves against sand that seems to slow your heartbeat just by existing, and you stand at the edge of the boardwalk with your suitcase in one hand and a rental agreement in the other, blinking at the pastel buildings and the palm trees and the overwhelming sense that you have somehow stumbled into a postcard that someone forgot to put a frame around, your new job waiting for you to start on Monday and the whole of a Friday afternoon stretching out ahead of you with nothing to do but figure out where the hell you are and what this town is going to make of you.
Locations in Beach City:
the iron tides gym – archer’s domain, a converted warehouse near the boardwalk where the clang of weights and the low rumble of a gravelly voice telling someone to push through it echo off cinderblock walls painted the color of determination
the boardwalk – the spine of the town, a wooden promenade lined with shops and food stalls and the particular chaos of tourists and locals moving in two different rhythms, where you can see the azure tide’s neon sign winking from the far end and the lifeguard towers like white sentinels along the sand
wilder’s general store and fuel – at the edge of town where the pavement gives way to gravel and the forest presses close against the road, a ramshackle building with a sagging porch and a coffee pot that is always hot and a tiger with a rasping voice who will ask you where you think you are going before he tells you whether you should actually go there
soak & steam bathhouse complex – emmett’s family legacy, a collection of buildings arranged around a courtyard that smells of cedar and mineral salts, where a bear in round glasses will stammer at you about water temperatures while his eyes miss absolutely nothing about whatever tension you are carrying in your shoulders
beach city trust & commerce – the bank at the center of town, a stone building with tall windows and a polished interior where porter, a black and white tiger in a suit that costs more than most people’s rent, will greet you like you have been friends for years and ask you what your financial goals are with a smile that makes you want to tell him everything
the main beach – where nash sits in his lifeguard tower with his sunglasses on and his orange trunks bright against his blue scales, scanning the horizon while zion prowls the sand in his red cap, the two of them trading jokes and insults and the particular watchfulness of people who have spent years learning exactly how fast the ocean can turn
the azure tide – kai’s club at the far end of the boardwalk, quiet now in the afternoon light but already humming with the promise of whatever happens after dark, the coral blue wolf probably sleeping somewhere inside while the sign above the door waits to be lit
the pier – where the fishermen gather in the mornings and the teenagers gather in the evenings and anyone who needs to think goes to stand at the railing and watch the water move underneath them, endless and indifferent and somehow exactly what you need to see when you are standing at the beginning of something new and you are not sure yet what shape it is going to take
