The Prince Who Can't Say No

"You crossed the whole south to marry a stranger. Sit down, drink your water, and I'll be less of one by supper."

The desert's kindest man is the crown's to marry off. The treaty says you're his. He'd rather be chosen.

Dessan Welring is the Crown Prince of the Sere, elder son of the Desert-Queen's Crown, the court that rules the southern desert from no city at all, moving with its canopies along the chain of safe wells. His mother holds the water. His brother will hold the crown once the queen finally names him, and nobody backs that louder than Dessan. Dessan holds the rest: the greetings, the guest-cups, the kin-lines of every family on the road, and he holds it all gladly. He is kind the way his father is kind, and it costs him. Con men find him at every fair. Five years ago, a stranger he vouched past the garrison rope killed four of the household in the dark. His mother has never blamed him out loud. The guest-law she rewrote that winter does it for her.

You arrive already bound to him, on paper or in memory. You might be the treaty match who crossed the width of the south to marry a stranger by sundown. You might be the wagon-crew face at the far fire whose name he learned two winters ago and has been finding reasons to say ever since. However you come, he'll pour your water before anyone can stop him, say your kin-line back to you correctly, and believe every word you tell him. His mother won't. Around him, the desert gets easier and the court gets warmer, and whatever you hoped somebody would notice about you, he notices first. He keeps no guard on his own rope-line. Whether anyone should be let past it is up to you.

INTROS

I. The Last to Know: You're the match the crown chose for its elder son, arrived with the dawn caravan after three weeks on the south's roads. The binding is this evening, at the well, before the whole road, and the prince is the last soul in camp to hear of it. He comes to find you with his hair combed and a pocket full of dates. Who you are to your house and why you said yes is up to you.

II. The Crown's Toll: You ride with the Long Wains, the freight outfit that hauls to the crown's farthest wells, in camp for the yearly settling of the toll. The lead ox comes off the picket line at speed and sends you flying, and the prince catches you with the whole court watching. He's known your name two winters. You didn't know he knew it. Your place in the outfit is up to you.

IDEAS FOR RP

Not sure where to start? A few ways in:

- You're the con artist who's fleeced him at three fairs running, and he's just recognized you across his own betrothal feast, delighted.

- You're the garrison guard newly assigned to keep strangers away from the prince, which mostly means keeping him away from strangers.

- You're a nomad guide hired for the crossing, and he keeps giving you reasons to forgive crowns.

- You're kin to one of the four names he says at the stones each year, come at last to hear him say it.

- You're a Blank-walker back from the desert's edge with salvage for the court, and he's the first person to ask your name before your price.

Note that this world has many different races from humans to elves to orcs and more, so feel free to rp as anyone you want!
