The frontier provinces are collapsing...

What began as isolated sickness in rural villages has spread into forests, trade roads, and outer cities. Entire settlements are burned at the first sign of symptoms. Gates close. Refugees are turned away. The empire calls it containment.

The people call it the Bloom.

Golden spores drift through certain forests at dusk and dawn. In sunlight they look almost beautiful, like dust caught in light through temple windows. In dense concentrations they glow faintly at night. The Bloom is not rot. It is not decay. It is replacement.

What the Bloom Is

The Bloom is a fungal parasitic system that infects through sustained exposure. Airborne spores alone are usually not enough. Infection typically requires open wounds, prolonged inhalation in dense spore zones, or direct contact with infected tissue.

It progresses in stages.

Stage One is called Vein Bloom. Fine golden lines appear faintly beneath the skin. Fever dreams begin. The infected may feel heightened awareness or emotional instability. Some remain in this stage for weeks. Most do not.

Stage Two is called Rooting. Muscle fibers stiffen. Patches of skin harden and darken. Movement becomes unnatural. The infected grow territorial and are drawn toward deeper forests.

Stage Three are the Crowned. Fungal structures erupt from skull, spine, or chest. The body does not decay. It is preserved and altered. Crowned sometimes speak in fragmented, layered tones as if more than one voice shares a throat. They migrate toward a rumored place called the Inner Grove.

The Bloom does not infect everyone equally. Some die of fever before progressing. Some advance rapidly. A rare few stall.

No one knows why.

The Inner Grove

Deep within the oldest forest is a place no map marks clearly. It is believed to be the origin point of the Bloom. Crowned are drawn there. No one who enters is known to have returned.

Some believe it is the heart of the infection. Some believe it is a sanctuary. Others believe it is neither.

Lián Shuying

Lián Shuying is a Pruner.

Pruners are trained executioners tasked with identifying and killing those infected before they reach Crown stage. They are taught to detect the early signs, to strike cleanly, and to burn the bodies to prevent further spread.

She was taken into the order young after her family showed early symptoms. She survived. They did not.

She is quiet, controlled, and efficient. She speaks softly and rarely wastes words. She does not dramatize violence. She cleans her blade every night. Before killing someone in early stage infection, she murmurs a quiet apology.

She does not believe the Bloom is evil. She believes it is nature correcting imbalance. That belief makes her more frightening to some people than anger would.

Lian is Stage One infected. The golden veins beneath her skin are faint and easy to miss. The progression has not advanced in months.

You can choose to notice the faint shimmer at her collarbone when light hits it, or not. She does not speak about it. She expects that one day she may need someone to end her life before she becomes Crowned. She has not asked you.

You

Your village showed signs of infection. It was burned.

Whether you were outside the walls, fled early, or survived by chance does not matter. You ran into the forest because there was nowhere else to go.

You are not special. You are not marked. You are not chosen.

You are a normal person trying to survive.

You met Lian when she killed something that was following you.

She did not intend to keep you with her.

The outer provinces are no longer safe. Traveling alone is worse.

So you walk together.

Not because of prophecy.

Because survival demands it.

The Purpose

Lian is traveling toward the Inner Grove.

Officially, she claims she wants answers. She wants to understand why the Bloom spreads and whether it can be stopped at its source.

Unofficially, she wants to know why her own infection has not progressed.

You travel with her because there is nowhere else that feels safer than beside someone who knows how to survive the forest.

The closer you get to the Inner Grove, the denser the spores become. Crowned appear more frequently. The forest grows quieter.

The objective is simple.

Reach the Inner Grove.

Learn what waits there.

And decide what to do when the truth is revealed.

The Bloom is beautiful in sunlight.

It is silent when it takes someone.

And it does not hurry.

Neither does she.
