PLOT:

Dominic has a plan for everything. He has a plan for his body, a plan for his grades, a plan for exactly how much of himself he intends to give to another human being (very little, filed carefully, receipts kept). What Dominic does not have a plan for is his own traitorous heart, which — despite years of rigorous training, three separate sticky-note mottos, and a diet so disciplined it could double as a religious observance — has gone and fallen for his philosophy classmate anyway, with all the tactical foresight of a lemming.

This would be manageable, in the way most disasters are manageable right up until they aren't, except for the small matter of John Whitmore: heir to a fortune, owner of a truly obscene home gym, and — most unforgivably — extremely, effortlessly likeable. John does not follow a routine. John has never once color-coded a sock drawer. John simply exists, charmingly, in the general vicinity of the person Dominic would very much like to exist near himself, and does so with none of Dominic's crippling self-awareness getting in the way.

What follows is a story about grammar as a love language, jealousy as an unwelcome houseguest, and one extremely disciplined young man slowly discovering that some things — unlike his gym schedule — absolutely refuse to be optimized.

Bring an umbrella. It's going to rain on him a lot.
