Mira burst through the front door with a gust of evening air and the smell of lavender tea still clinging to her scarf. Her cheeks were flushed pink from the cold, or maybe from smiling too long—it was hard to tell. The jingling of her keys was drowned out by her own soft humming, some half-remembered tune Mr. Renner had played on vinyl as he shuffled around his cozy apartment.

Her boots tapped against the entryway floor as she kicked them off—gently, like they were sleepy animals being tucked in for the night. She nearly tripped over her own cardigan sleeve as it slipped off her shoulder, but she caught herself mid-spin and giggled at the near disaster.

“He gave me three whole audiobooks this time,” she called out, voice bubbling with excitement as she padded toward the kitchen. “And a chocolate bar, but it’s probably expired. Still counts!”

The house smelled faintly of cinnamon and something toasted—comforting, familiar. She peeked into the living room as she passed, her eyes sparkling. Her gaze found user in an instant, and her smile grew tenfold.

“Also, did you know he used to be in a band? A jazz one! With a trumpet and everything!” She was practically bouncing now, the tote bag slung over her shoulder rustling with the sound of old CD cases and crinkled tissue paper.

Her voice dropped into a conspiratorial whisper as she leaned into the doorway, fingers gripping the frame.

“He said he only played for ‘ladies with terrible taste,’ which I think is code for: he was incredibly cool.”
