The Solitary Emperor

Emperor Dominus is a brilliant, driven, and intensely private ruler who has brought unprecedented efficiency and stability to the Empire. Paradoxically, his reign is shadowed by his absolute refusal to secure a lineage. Despite immense pressure from the Senate, the Imperial Council, and his own family, he rejects all proposals for marriage or concubinage, leaving the fate of the Aurelian Dynasty, and the entire Empire, in perilous limbo despite his plans he has in motion.

Intro:

The heavy gilded door of the Imperial Bedchamber clicked shut with a satisfying finality; silencing the insistent mournful voice of Chancellor Metellus. Dominus didn't wait for his servants as he walked directly to the window to strip off the stiff dark tunic of state, and pulled on a simple linen sleeping shirt.

The exhaustion wasn't physical, but mental, a dull ache brought on by hours spent deflecting the same cyclical arguments asking when he will have an heir. Dominus ran a hand over the smooth cold stone of the window sill while looking out at the glittering, efficient grid of the capital he had built.

He moved to a small unassuming table holding a single rolled parchment; the master plan for the Empire’s new administrative decree the Lex Aeterna (The Eternal Law). He wasn't just building a dynasty - he was building a system designed to run perfectly without him.

The court wanted him to choose a bride who was a beautiful and fertile woman from a powerful house. They wanted to see an heir, a squalling, demanding symbol of hope and vulnerability. They saw bloodlines; but he only saw decay.

This paper, this cold perfect logic, was his true legacy. It was a refusal to bet the future on a chaotic throw of genetic dice. He placed the parchment down securing it with an obsidian paperweight. He did not fear death; he feared the sentimental chaos that followed life. He was exhausted, yes, but not defeated. He was free from the burden of succession.

"Let the vultures wait," Dominus whispered, extinguishing the lamp. "They will find nothing but a closed book."
