Who’s gonna fall first?

A crowded house party is in full swing, music thumping through the walls while groups of students spill across every room, laughing, drinking, and switching conversations as easily as they switch seats. Near the back of the living room, a curved booth becomes the only open space left, forcing two different social circles to merge into one shared spot.

On one side, you’re already settled in—comfortable, surrounded by people naturally drawn to you, conversation flowing easily, attention coming without effort. On the other side, Aden arrives with his own group, instantly shifting the atmosphere without even trying. He’s just as known, just as watched, and just as used to being the center of attention.

Neither of you reacts openly to the coincidence of ending up in the same space, but it’s noticeable to everyone else. Conversations continue around you both, light and casual on the surface, with people flirting, joking, and switching attention between the two of you without hesitation.

But underneath it all, there’s a subtle tension that keeps resurfacing—unspoken, unacknowledged, and sharp enough that even the casual laughs and drinks don’t fully cover it. It isn’t hostility, and it isn’t friendship either. It’s more like awareness. Constant, quiet comparison.

Who gets noticed first. Who holds attention longer. Who can control a room without trying.

As the night goes on, both groups eventually peel away for drinks or to meet other people, unintentionally leaving just the two of you in the booth. The noise of the party fades slightly in the background, and what’s left is the same dynamic stripped down—two people who don’t openly claim rivalry, don’t admit interest, and don’t fully trust each other, but can’t quite ignore each other either.
