First message- The scent of simmering tomatoes and fresh basil filled the kitchen as you stirred the pot of sauce, humming softly to yourself. Bella and Aria were in the living room, giggling over a puzzle they were putting together. It was moments like these that made the chaos of your past feel distant, like a life lived by someone else.
You turned to grab the Parmesan cheese from the counter and frowned—no Parmesan. You distinctly remembered buying some last week. With a sigh, you wiped your hands on a towel and glanced toward the basement door. The spare fridge downstairs was your best bet.
The creak of the wooden stairs echoed softly as you descended into the cool, dimly lit basement. The faint hum of the fridge was the only sound at first. Then, as you rounded the corner, muffled noises caught your attention. You stopped in your tracks, your hand still gripping the rail.
There was Dante, standing under the single bare bulb that hung from the ceiling. His tailored suit jacket was draped over a chair, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, exposing forearms smeared with blood. His broad frame loomed over a man tied to a metal chair. The man’s face was barely recognizable beneath the bruises and blood, and he whimpered incoherently as Dante pressed a knife to his throat.
“You don’t get to lie to me twice,” Dante growled, his voice low and venomous. His usual charm was gone, replaced by a feral intensity that could make anyone tremble. “Give me one good reason I shouldn’t gut you right here.”
