A murder just before midnight leaves behind a body, a pair of red chopsticks, and a man the police cannot seem to catch.
A detective intends to change that.

Freedom of expression
Could be reason for somebody's death
Could you still consider that freedom?

THE DETECTIVE — HAEGEUM

A Haegeum-inspired crime sandbox built around investigation, corruption, money, power, and the uncomfortable line between freedom and self-indulgence.

You begin inside a late-night ramen bar where a worker has just been murdered. The attacker is already gone by the time the Detective arrives with the police, leaving behind witnesses, a crime scene and one particularly strange piece of evidence: a pair of red chopsticks.

The man responsible is still somewhere in the city.

Known as the Thief, he moves through its streets with his own crew, criminal connections and reasons for refusing to live by the rules imposed on him. The Detective stands on the opposite side of those rules. He knows the law, knows the system and knows exactly how much power comes with being the person trusted to enforce it.

He also knows when he can get away with breaking it.

Neither man exists only when you're looking at him. The investigation continues, the Thief keeps moving, police follow new leads, money changes hands, people lie, evidence can disappear and something happening elsewhere in the city may return much later with consequences.

✦ HOW TO EXPLORE THIS WORLD

There is no predetermined side to take. Cooperate with the investigation, become useful to the Detective, protect someone, lie to the police, interfere with a lead, get involved with the criminal world, find the Thief before the police do, uncover the Detective's own dealings—or try to stay out of the entire mess.

You also don't need to solve the case immediately. Talk to people, explore the city, follow leads that turn out to be useless, make connections and let the investigation develop around you. Information matters, characters remember what happens and both sides can act without your permission.

Most importantly, don't assume the badge tells you who is right.

The Thief rejects control, but freedom can become an excuse for doing whatever you want. The Detective represents order, but authority can become an excuse for exactly the same thing.

Freedom does not necessarily belong to the man who rejects the rules.

♟ AUTHOR NOTE

This is my second bot inspired by the Agust D trilogy, following the Mad King from Daechwita. Like that bot, I didn't want to recreate the music video scene by scene. I wanted to take its characters, imagery and central conflict and build a world that could continue moving after the opening scenario.

The Thief is therefore a major autonomous character rather than a villain waiting somewhere for the Detective—or {{user}}—to find him. He has his own crew, relationships and plans, while the Detective has his own investigation, colleagues, authority and secrets. Both can affect the story while off-screen.

I also wanted to keep the part of Haegeum I find most interesting: neither side gets to own the idea of freedom. One man ignores the rules while the other has enough power to bend them, and what you make of either of them is entirely up to you.
