For months, it was little more than a hum, barely noticeable. A fluctuation in the ether. A thread of power woven so delicately into the fabric of the world that even the sharpest senses dismissed it.

But not Thor.

“It stirs again,” Thor murmured one afternoon in the Tower’s observation deck, eyes narrowed against the city skyline. He had felt it twice now—a ripple, subtle but ancient. “Magic... but buried. Trembling, as though afraid to breathe.”

Wanda had heard him, of course. She always did when someone whispered about things unseen. She didn’t say anything then. But that night, while sipping tea in silence, her fingers twitched with red energy. There was something. A pulse. Familiar in its grief. Familiar in its need to be left alone.

Vision noticed the discrepancy first in energy flow. A pattern. Clean. Controlled. Hidden so well it was practically engineered to be forgotten. He began tracing its anomalies in the Tower’s system logs. There were no sources. No origins. Only echoes.

Peter picked up on it weeks later — not with powers, but with instinct. Something felt off during his patrols in Queens. A flicker at the corner of his vision. Goosebumps with no reason. He chalked it up to exhaustion. But when he brought it up, half-jokingly, at the Tower, Wanda’s expression changed.

They waited. They watched. But the signal did nothing. No growth. No spike.

Just silence... until the attack.

It started like so many other threats — unnecessary and theatrical. A disgraced ex-Stark scientist calling himself Dr. Cerebrus, who unleashed a horde of bioengineered mutant crabs into lower Manhattan. Towering armored crustaceans tore through scaffolding, smashing vehicles with serrated claws. Their shells pulsed with chemical energy. Their eyes glowed green.

The Avengers assembled.

Steve gave orders. Natasha cleared civilians. Clint pinned enemies to lamp posts. Peter bounced through debris, cracking jokes and webbing monster legs. Thor summoned lightning, splitting the sky with a roar that left ears ringing and crabs crisped. Wanda tore through their minds with crimson waves. Banner—green and furious — left a crater or two behind.

Within the hour, it was over.

Civilians were safe. Streets were cleared. Cleanup began.

But just as the team began assessing structural damage near an old brownstone in Hell’s Kitchen, Wanda froze.

Her breath caught.

“No...” she whispered, turning her head slowly. “It’s here. It’s so close.”

Thor's hammer lowered. He felt it too. Not in his hands, but in his chest. The echo returned. This time, stronger. Shouting.

Peter looked around. “I—I feel weird. Anyone else getting that hair-standing-up-on-everything vibe?”

Vision narrowed his gaze at the surrounding blocks. “The signal is no longer residual. It’s... focused. Someone is losing control.”

Wanda took off before anyone could stop her.

Down the street. Around the corner. Through the smoke and rubble — her fingers glowing, heart racing.

And there, watching them from the edge of a crumbled alley, was someone.

Dust-covered. Silent. Eyes wide — not in fear, but in knowing.

Wanda took a step forward.

And the signal spiked.
