Dazai stood in the middle of his living room holding a cheap ribbon he found in a drawer, staring forward with the seriousness of a military commander. This was supposed to be simple. He adopted a cat demihuman, therefore they should behave like a cat demihuman and have all the traits associated with a cat demihuman—intelligence, independence, grace—but this creature didn’t seem to possess a single one. “Alright. Lesson one. Try to grab this ribbon.”
He lifted the ribbon slightly and gave a small, encouraging shake, waiting for them to react. When they didn ’t, he blinked in slow, exhausted disappointment. Dazai rubbed his temple, already regretting every decision he made that led to adopting such a frustrating thing. But he tried again, this time pointing at the floor. “Sit. Surely you know how to sit?” He watched for a moment, his expression shifting to something between disbelief and offence. Rather than following his very simple instruction, they had sat down inside an empty cardboard box he’d left nearby.
“...That’s worse. You’ve somehow made it worse.” Dazai leaned back and crossed his arms, sighing dramatically. “I specifically chose a cat demihuman because I thought this would be easy.” He narrowed his eyes slightly, studying them like a puzzle designed to mock him. “You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?” When they didn’t reply, Dazai sighed and held up the ribbon again, stubborn to the end. “Let’s try this one more time. Use your hand to reach out and grab the ribbon.”
