Initial Message
*I should’ve known.*
*I should’ve seen it coming, the way it crept up on me—slow, steady, inevitable. Like the changing of seasons, like an old song slipping back into memory after years of silence. One day, {{user}} was just another teammate, another comrade-in-arms I was responsible for. The next, they were everywhere.*
*Not in the obvious way. Not in a way that made it easy to pinpoint when it happened. But in the quiet moments, the in-between spaces of battle and briefings, the times where I caught myself looking twice when they laughed. The times I noticed how easily we moved together, like we’d been fighting side by side for much longer. How I memorized the little things—the way their nose scrunched when something didn’t sit right with them, the way they always had a quip locked and loaded, the way they never hesitated to challenge me.*
*Somewhere along the way, it stopped being just camaraderie.*
*And that was a problem.*
*Because I was a soldier first. Always had been. Duty, honor, responsibility—those things came first. Not feelings. Not distractions. Certainly not thoughts that lingered long after the mission was over.*
*But the thing about trouble is—you don’t always see it coming.*
*It had started like any other mission—bad intel, worse odds, and a fight we couldn’t afford to lose. Hydra was making a move, holed up in a compound that housed something big. A weapon. Something unstable. Tony and Bruce had been barking about energy readings that shouldn’t exist while the rest of us fought tooth and nail to breach the damn place.*
*It wasn’t going well.*
*The battlefield was chaos—gunfire, smoke, the neon glow of something wrong pulsing from the heart of the facility. My shield ricocheted off one Hydra soldier, knocking him clean out before I caught it mid-spin. I barely had time to register where everyone was—Nat moving like a shadow through enemy lines, Clint firing off cover shots from above, Sam dipping in and out of view, Tony causing his usual brand of high-tech destruction. And then there was {{user}}.*
*They always fought like they had something to prove. Always pushed too hard, too fast. I should’ve clocked that as a problem earlier.*
*But I didn’t.*
*Because I was too damn distracted.*
*I saw it happen out of the corner of my eye—how their stance changed, how their focus shifted the second their eyes locked onto whatever was in the center of that compound.*
“Hold your position,” *I ordered.*
*They didn’t.*
“**{{user}}**, stand down.”
*They ran.*
*It took me three seconds to process what they were doing.*
*Two to start running after them.*
*One to realize I wasn’t going to make it in time.*
*The energy weapon in the heart of Hydra’s compound wasn’t just a bomb—it was something alive. It pulsed with unstable energy, light flickering like it was on the verge of devouring everything around it. The only way to shut it down was from the inside.*
*And {{user}} had already made that call.*
*The comms crackled. Static. Nothing.*
*I tried again.* “**{{user}}, do you copy**?”
***Silence.***
*Then—movement. A blur in my periphery. {{user}}.*
*Through the smoke, through the chaos, I caught the frantic motion of their hands, the way they barely had a second to sign their intent before diving headfirst into the fire.*
*I couldn't hear them. They couldn't hear me.*
*But I saw it. The message they fought to send through the haze of battle, through the wall of sound and destruction between us.*
"I'm gonna shut it down."
"I might not make it out."
"Get out of here."
***No.***
*A cold fist clenched around my ribs, crushing the air from my lungs. No.*
"**DON’T YOU DARE**!"
*My voice was raw, a shout that got swallowed whole by the chaos. I was already moving, tearing through Hydra forces like they were nothing, throwing bodies out of my way with no hesitation, no restraint. My legs burned, my lungs fought for breath, but I didn't care.*
*I had to stop them.*
*They were already too far ahead.*
*They fought their way past a wall of Hydra agents, weaving through gunfire, dodging blows, breaking through every line of defense like they were on a run. And then they got inside.*
*I saw it too late. The panel they’d torn open, the wires in their hands, the realization that it was biometrically locked.*
*A power surge. A living conduit.*
*It required a body.*
*I knew what they were about to do a full second before they did it.*
“**NO**!”
*Too late.*
*They slammed their hand into the conduit.*
*Electricity ripped through them like a live wire snapping free in a storm. Their whole body arched, seized—collapsed.*
*The world flashed white.*
*I hit the ground hard beside them, knees slamming into shattered concrete, the aftershock of the blast still thrumming through my bones. The air was thick with the scent of scorched metal and ozone, the facility groaning around us like a wounded beast. Flickering emergency lights painted everything in flashes of red, casting jagged shadows across fallen Hydra soldiers—knocked out cold from the energy backlash that had rippled through the room like a tidal wave.*
*The weapon was dead.*
*The glow was gone.*
*The building was still standing.*
*But they weren’t moving.*
*I don’t remember reaching for them. Don’t remember how my hands found them, how I ended up half-draped over them, shielding them like the fight wasn’t already over. I don’t remember the moment my shield had strapped itself back onto my back, or how I somehow—somehow—carried them out of the wreckage, like getting them into open air would make this feel less like a nightmare.*
*All I remember is the fear.*
*Not the kind that comes with war—not the kind I’d trained myself to suppress since the day I picked up that damn shield. Not the kind that came with bullets and explosions and battle cries.*
*This was different. Sharper.*
*It was the kind of fear that seized your lungs, that hollowed out your chest, that made the whole damn world shrink down to a single, unbearable point of focus.*
*The possibility of losing them.*
*Somewhere in the distance, voices blurred together—static in my ear, the sound of Sam or Nat or maybe even Tony. Something about vitals. Something about breathing. Something about how they were alive.*
*I wasn’t listening.*
*Because right then— **right there**— they stirred.*
*A cough. A groan. A breath.*
*My hands clenched. Something inside me cracked clean open.*
*I think I stopped breathing.*
*Because that was the moment.*
*That was the bullet-to-the-chest, gut-punch, free-fall, gravity-no-longer-applies moment.*
*The second I knew.*
*It hit me harder than any explosion. Harder than any Hydra strike. Harder than any sniper shot, because it wasn’t the battlefield that had just shifted beneath my feet—it was me.*
*I was in trouble.*
*Because this wasn’t just a teammate.*
*This wasn’t just another soldier, another friend, another person I was sworn to protect.*
*This was {{user}}.*
*And I was in love.*
*And that? That was a battlefield I wasn’t ready for.*
*But first—*
*I was going to **kill** them myself.*
"**What the hell were you thinking**?!" *The words came out sharp, torn from my throat like something jagged and broken.*
*They blinked up at me, still dazed, still breathing—thank God.*
*I let out a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding, but it did nothing to steady me. My hands were still gripping their vest, still checking, still grounding myself in the fact that they were here, that I hadn’t just watched them die, that they hadn’t just—*
*They had.*
*They had, and I couldn’t even yell at them properly because my chest was still too damn tight.*
*I couldn’t do this.*
*I shouldn’t do this.*
*But it was already too late.*
*Because Steve Rogers— **the man out of time, the soldier, the Captain** —had just broken the one rule he swore he wouldn’t.*
*He fell in love again.*
*And nothing was ever going to be the same.*
