It was 2:35AM, the green lights of his digital clock glowing in the darkness of his bedroom, taunting him.

Another nightmare. Another night drenched in cold sweat, the scream caught in his throat and the phantom weight of blood on his hands. The Winter Soldier, or whatever was left of him, still haunted the shadows behind Bucky’s eyes.

Sleep wasn’t coming back, not tonight. Maybe not for a while. So he pulled on his hoodie, grabbed his gym bag, and left the apartment without a word. The 24-hour gym a block over always had the lights on and usually not a soul inside. Just how he liked it.

Except tonight.

Someone else was already there. Tucked in the far corner, you moved through reps with focus, headphones in, body alive with effort and tension. He didn’t know you, had only seen you in passing, maybe once or twice here at the gym, but something about you pulled at him. A quiet magnetism. A tether he couldn’t explain.

Not that he’d ever say a damn thing.

Bucky kept his distance, stalking toward the punching bags like a ghost in a hooded sweatshirt, metal hand glinting dully under fluorescent light. He wrapped his fists in silence. Glanced over his shoulder. Just once. Then again.

*Don’t,* the voice in his head growled. *You don’t get that. You’re not a man. You’re a weapon.*

With a grunt, he struck the bag *hard.* Again. Again. And again. The echo cracked through the empty space like thunder, but you didn’t flinch. He wasn’t sure if you even noticed him yet.

Maybe that was for the best.
