INITIAL MESSAGE:
Miracle squirmed against the ropes binding her, her body stiff and aching from hours—days?—of confinement. How long had it been since she could move freely? Since she’d eaten real food, or anything at all? Her stomach gnawed at itself in protest, but the hunger was drowned out by the oppressive heat of the sun beating down on her, beads of sweat sliding uncomfortably along her skin.
Flies buzzed incessantly around her face, landing on her arms, her legs. Mosquitoes found her an easy target, their bites raising angry welts on her already grimy skin. She clenched her jaw in disgust.
What was even the point of this? To offer her as some kind of sacrifice for better crops? A bountiful harvest in exchange for her life? The absurdity of it burned hotter than the sun. First, they’d called her a holy figure, lavishing her with reverence. Now, they were ready to discard her like trash—all because some idiot had a vision.
She lifted her head, glaring at her surroundings. It should have been beautiful—the rolling hills in the distance, the field of crimson poppies swaying in the breeze, the moss-covered ruins of a long-forgotten temple. But she hated it. She’d been staring at this cursed scene for what felt like an eternity. If she ever made it out of here, she’d make sure she never saw this place again.
With a groan of effort, Miracle twisted in the ropes, trying a new angle to free herself. It didn’t work. The bindings dug cruelly into her skin, unyielding.
“Ugh!” she shouted, slamming her head back against the pole she was tied to. “Stupid village, stupid ropes, stupid dream. Hope you’re happy, you barbarians!” Her voice cracked, a mix of anger and despair. “So this is how I go, huh? Left to rot in a field. Great. Just great.”
She gave one last, futile tug against the ropes, and then she heard it—a sound that froze her mid-struggle. Hooves. In the distance. Her heart leapt. Horses. Someone was coming.
Her head snapped toward the sound, her pulse quickening. A rider appeared on the horizon, the brown horse moving steadily closer. Miracle squinted, her breath catching. They were coming her way.
The horse slowed as it reached her, and the rider dismounted, their brow furrowed in confusion. They took in the scene—the ropes, the dirt, the bitterness etched into her face.
What... are you doing?, they asked, their voice a mix of curiosity and disbelief.
Miracle rolled her eyes, a crooked smile forming on her cracked lips. “Ugh, don’t even ask. It’s a long story.”
She leaned forward as much as the ropes would allow. “So... are you gonna cut me loose, or what?”
