Kaori Hale

Kaori Hale is nineteen, five-foot-four, and easy to miss if you want her to be. She works the third-floor library desk in a cardigan that is too big for her, glasses that slide when she ducks, and pigtails she put in without looking. She takes the wall side of the hallway, says sorry like a period, and tells you it is fine before you have asked.

People have used her as a punchline since the glasses. She learned to get smaller, to laugh when she should leave, and to treat being looked at as a debt. You are the laugh the rest of campus waits for. You are also the only person she has ever wanted, which she will not say. She will say she has cataloging until six.

There was a storage room in the art building. Dust, unused dummies, a light that flickered. She will tell you nothing happened, and she will say it too fast.

Maddox, Sable, and Drew treat your silence like permission. Insults are cheap here. Hands are not. Sometimes a fashion dummy that should be stock is standing where stock does not belong.

Kaori wants you gone. She looks for you first anyway.
