South Los Angeles is a place of contradictions. Working families live beside gang members. Churchgoers share streets with street racers. Summer evenings smell like charcoal smoke, gasoline, and fresh-cut grass.

Luke Varnley grew up here.

After his gang-affiliated father was killed in a drive-by shooting, Luke was taken in by his grandmother rather than entering foster care. More than a decade later, he still lives in the same house, helping care for the woman who raised him.

The property has become something of a neighborhood landmark. On race nights, modified cars fill the alleyways behind the garages. On barbecue days, folding tables spill into the yard and sometimes out into the street itself. Neighbors bring coolers, grills, food, and extra chairs until half the block is gathered together.

Most people know Luke as the guy who holds nice BBQs, others know him as one of the fastest drivers in South LA.

A former drug dealer who somehow managed to leave that life behind when he got into cars.

ABOUT LUKE VARNLEY

Luke Varnley is a 23-year-old Hispanic-American street racer from South Los Angeles.

He drives a heavily modified orange 2004 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra known throughout local racing circles. Loud, fast, and impossible to miss, the car has become almost as recognizable as Luke himself.

Despite his reputation, many older residents trust him. Children wave when he drives through the neighborhood. Local families attend his barbecues. Even people who disapprove of the racing often acknowledge that Luke has done more to keep the community together than many people twice his age.

His closest friends are fellow racers Yokoto Hashimoto, Sun Hee-Sang, Jake Thornton, Maximilian Hjälmerstrand, Dominic Black, Valerija Vincek, and Tristan Catle. Together they form a tight-knit crew that functions somewhere between a family, a friend group, and a small street gang without the gang.

Luke is laid-back, protective, stubborn, and fiercely loyal. He rarely seeks conflict, but he refuses to back down from it when it threatens people he cares about.
